How to Explain Why I'm having WLS to Friends

May 05, 2011

I tried to do a search on this topic because I'm sure it's been posted before, but how do you explain WHY you're are getting WLS to friends if they don't think you should get it? The thing is, I'm on a diet right now (WW) to lose some pre-surgery weight and I've now lost 22 lbs. My co-worker approached me and says how great it is that I've lost that much weight and a friend of her's is doing WW and has gone from a size 12 to a 4 in 3 years. Basically she saying if I kept doing what I'm doing then I shouldn't have to have the surgery. The only thing I could say is, no I still need the surgery...of course she says why and I said to her after you've dieted as much as I have and been overweight all my life, not just as an adult, it makes things a bit more difficult. She seemed to accept the reason but I know she's thinking differently. She also seems to be the type of person to yap about it to someone else, which is annoying and at the same time I like her. She is a nice person.

I really find it hard to put into words in a way that they can really understand why I'm doing this without a long drawn out conversation where I feel like I'm trying to convince them then it sounds like I'm convincing myself. I know my reasons but maybe they won't be good enough for someone else. I'm not quite sure what to say and it bothers me. Family is a bit easier because they know me and my history with weight. I've only worked in this office for a little over a year and they don't know me that well. I can't imagine what will be said when I have PS. I'm coming back with some BIG knockers!
