23-Jan-03 Hello. I have been considering this surgery for about 4 years, however I refused to do it then because of the complications I read about. Now that the surgery is more advanced, I've decided to pursue it again. I am a 46 year old female, mother of four ranging in age from 30-20. I have a wonderful husband, not very talkative but very understanding. I began the battle with my weight over 20 years ago after I quit smoking. I began to yo yo diet with several programs, Weight Watchers, Atkins, Nutrisystems, consulted a bariatric physician, Sugar Busters, Step Forward, Weigh Less, you name it, I've tried it. At the age of 44 I began to have problems with swelling in my feet and ankles and borderline hypertension. My primary care physician prescribed furosemide for me for the fluid which he also stated would help with my high blood pressure. About a year ago I began to have lower back pain and had surgery on my right knee in April of 2002. The weight is causing me to have joint pain, lethargy. I have been very unhappy with myself since gaining the weight. I have lost a maximum of 30 lbs and gained the 30 lbs back plus more. For the past two years I have been taking water aerobics which helps with the joint pain. This was recommended by my orthopaedic surgeon. I really enjoy the water but it's so cold right now, I only get in about one day a week of exercise. While on ObesityHelp, I saw that we had two physicians in my local area and I have contacted the office and scheduled to attend the seminar on Feb 14 (CAN'T WAIT). I understand that things will go pretty quickly once I have attended the seminar. I have CIGNA POS which does pay for WLS as long as it's medically necessary and weighing 276 lbs at 5'4" with a BMI of 45.5 and the medical problems I'm currently having, I shouldn't have a problem getting approval. I will be looking for an angel and hopefully I will be able to assist someone in the future. I've enjoyed reading all the posts here and congratulations to all those who have had successful WLS. I look forward to my next post.
