Question about coffee

I was told I have to quit coffee (caffiene) before my sleeve.

Did you have to give up caffiene? And if so, did you drink it again afterwards? How long afterwards did you drink it?

I don't think it's the end of the world to give it up. I think i'll be able to do it. i'm starting to wean off of it now in the months before I actually have to give it up.

Ihave gone weeks without it, and I was fine.

I find as soon as I say I can NEVER have it again, I want it even more! LOL Typical!

I was told no caffeine, but coffee is OK after 6 months (decaf).  I needed to quit anyway.

Amazing how different all docs are....I drank coffee until the day before surgery.  Was told I could have it again "as tolerated"  about 3 days after surgery I was sipping my java!  They did suggest I cut back from 4 cups a day- so most days I have 2....maybe 3...depends on the day.  I guess the question is Why do they want you to stop?

Every plan and recommendations are different. I never had any restrictions on coffee/caffeine pre and post op. It was only recommended to avoid coffee a couple of weeks after surgery due to the issue that it can cause wicked heartburn. I have my regular 2 cups of coffee a day with no problems.

I was told decaf was good as a clear liquid (black) and was told I could drink regular  after 3 months , that caffeine dehydrates you is a myth according to my surgeon , nut and endocrinologist

I mix my coffee beans part decaf part regular before I grind them at the store , so its like half calf

Thank you for the responses!

The reason I was given is because it's acidic and it's a dieuretic. I usally only drink one cup per day, some days none. It's just the thought of never having it again.
The dietician did tell me to decrease the amount I drink. Instead of a venti, she said to get a tall. That makes sense.

When I went for my psych eval, we were talking about chocolate. I LOVE chocolate. She asked me "How do you feel about not eating chocolate anymore?" I said I don't plan on "not eating it anymore" because if I say that I can never have it again, i'll binge on it, and want it even more!

She agreed with me. LOL Now i'm wondering if it was a trick question!

I'm so glad you posted this DSJSMOM23.  I work night shift, at a job where I'm just sitting/standing around, waiting for a crisis to happen.  I won't say that I live off of coffee, but there are some nights that I have to have a few cups to keep me "alert and going".  Every program recommends different things, but you have offered me a light at the end of my tunnel by bringing this up!

I have a cup in the morning and use it to swallow down my PPI..I've been doing that since 6 weeks out. I was told to give it up during my pre-op diet, but I didn't. Instead! I had the joy of 3 days of migraine like headaches while recovering from surgery in the hospital. Let this be a lesson to all of you!

I also was told no caffeine, but decaf is Ok.  I was allowed decaf pretty much right out of the gate, and it has never bothered me.  There are low acid types out there you could try if you are concerned with the acid.  I was very surprised to realized I didn't miss the caffeine- I used to drink a coupld pots a day.  Then again, after I quit caffeine I ended up going on Adderral, so just replaced the stimulant.

I was told no coffee until 3 months post op.  Then I could have Decaf coffee only.  Since I have a health condition that doesn't allow me to consume caffeine anyway, it wasn't a big deal.  I've been on caffeine free/decaf drinks for 8 years.  Once  I was cleared to drink coffee, if I drink it it is approximately 2-3 cups of Decaf.
