I decided to order self-pay lab work before moving.  Did I order the wrong iron test by looking at the following results:

Iron Total = 157 (50-170)

TIBC = 289 (250-450)

Saturation = 54% (20-50%)

Another confusion; FSH is 6.7 and then the words, "you are not menopausal."  I'm old (55)-- could RNY put menopause in remission, too? (apologies if these questions are stupid)

I just leaned this myself- you have to request ferretin levels be cheeked. That indicates the iron 'reserves' you have.

Hemoglobin and hematocrit are the tests that show how much iron is in your blood right now, ready to work. Ferritin is the iron not currently used, but "in the bank," as it were, for future need.

As the others stated, a ferritin test is the most important because it tells you how well your iron has stored.

As far as the FSH test, it needs to be drawn on the 3rd day of your cycle (counting from the first day of your period) to be accurate.  If it were drawn on any other cycle day, then it can fluctuate greatly. Tracking your results over time is important because it's not unusual for your FSH level to be low one day and then quite high the next. A low FSH level in a woman who is having hot flashes and changing periods does not eliminate the likelihood that you're still in perimenopause.

Also, an FSH test alone isn't usually indicative of menopause -- test of estradiol and lack of a cycle for lengths of time combined with it are most accurate. Menopause is defined as 12 months without a menstrual bleed, in the absence of other conditions.  I do not believe that WLS can reverse menopause -- however, fat does affect estrogen levels... so who knows.

Hope this helps.
