For those who are lactose intolerant

I am now lactose intolerant... Blah.

Before I had surgery, when I was nursing my little guy, he had a milk protein allergy so I had to cut all dairy out of my diet. I used rice milk and that worked ok. I recall trying the almond milk but didn't like it as well.

The rice milk is higher in carbs but I recall not caring for the almond milk when I tried it. I tried lactaid a couple of weeks ago and had diarrhea but I am not sure if it was because my surgery was so new. I am wondering if I should try the lactaid again or get the almond milk. The lactaid has a lot more protein but I hate to waste money if I'm not going to be able to tolerate it. Any thoughts on this? Has anyone tolerated the almond milk better? How does it taste mixed with protein shakes? Can you use it for making soup, etc?  Or should I fork out the few bucks and try the lactaid again?

Thanks!

I do best on almond milk. Anything else is to thick for my system and I get a little nauseated from it. I get nauseated too from any protein shakes, although saltines help. But only with the dairy does it continue to bloating and diarrhea.

True victory comes at the very end, when you can say, " I lived, and will gladly do it again." View "failure" as a setback, and meet each accomplishment with a larger goal.

I use Silk lowfat vanilla soy milk and it's great in the shakes and puddings. Have you tried it?

I use the Kroger brand of lactose-free milk with no problems at all.

Agreed. I use the Kroger brand and it isn't near as expensive and tastes great.

For some reason I forgot about soy. Its been a long time since I've had it. The baby was sensitive to soy too- so I couldn't use it then. Maybe I will pick some up and retry the lactaid in a few weeks.

Lactaid has tons of sugar. Look at the label. You probably had dumping syndrome. I get the light coconut milk. The fat in it is actually a healthy fat. Good luck with everything. I know it sucks to be lactose intolerant all of a sudden and find something that tastes as good as milk without all the added sugar.

I don't tolerate almond milk very well. It gives me sour stomach/indigestion every single time which is a shame because I like it very much. I use many almond products as I am wheat/grain/gluten/soy/and sugar free.  Once I gave up soy I was able to get off of thyroid meds. It's not good for you. I enjoy drinking protein with coconut milk.

Since surgery, I've been drinking Silk Light Soy Vanilla.  I love it!!  It's low in calories and has protein.

I don't like almond milk either.  Besides, it doesn't have much protein.

You could always try the Lactaid pills (they have chewables) and then drink whatever you want.
