Planning my first 5k

Ok, I haven't walked more than the length of the grocery store for a few years.   A friend of mine invited me to walk a 5k with her in Phoenix in Nov .  I said yes.  Ah , guess I'm going to have to find my walking shoes and start training !  First get the OK from my surgeon though. I've had some problems with an incision opening. I think it'll be just fine in 3 months .  So then I found another one in Dec called the Hot Chocolate 5K, sounds fun .   Never did I ever think I would want to exercise, for fun !!!   I emailed my husband he's proud .  He's doing his first ever marathon in Afghanistan in November. Yikes !

The only thing you need to do (besides talking to your doctor) is walk. Try to get the distance in first, then try to increase your speed. I use a treadmill, and my first 5k was yesterday. I was afraid that it would be so much harder because it was outside, but it was just fine.

It really helps to have someone with you at the race. I met a lady and we kept each other going. She even got me to run. It turns out she had the lap band four years ago.

Just remember to keep hydrating. I sweated a lot (Florida in the summer). There were two water stations along the route, and I also had a 24 oz bottle with me.

So the very first thing I will tell you is to go and get professionally fitted and tell them you are starting with walking and progressing to running and doing something like the C25K plan (I am assuming) and be sure you buy two pairs of shoes and alternate them every other day.

Yea for you!!

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!
