Hypoglycemia - another wacky low blood sugar.... after eating tuna and green beans????

I just finished eating dinner.  I had tuna with a spoon of mayo and a cup of green beans (plain).  I ate slowly and took an hour to finish eating.  I felt OK.  Then about 20 minutes after I finished, I started feeling cold and clammy and very shaky and my heart was racing.  I checked my blood sugar and it was 67!  I hardly had any carbs!!!  I don't understand why I would have a drop.  I was concerned I would continue dropping so I checked 10 minutes later, and it was 92.  I do not understand what is going on.  I was at 80 before I began my meal, so this really doesn't make sense to me.

Does anyone have any insight as to what would cause a drop in blood sugar when I had only 2 carbs (from the green beans) in my entire meal?  I'm getting very frustrated because I don't know what to eat anymore.   :(

Is there sugar in the mayo? Maybe that triggered something?

No sugar in the mayo.  This is a mystery.  Tired of this.  :(   Thanks for your input!

Every now and then I get an odd reading. My doc asked me if I wash my hands before testing EVERY time. I said no..... Home test kits are not perfect, but more a tool. With what you ate, no, those readings don't make sense. If I get a reading that doesn't make sense like that one, I will repeat it immediately and it is often different.

Hi Martha!  Thanks SO much for what you emailed me!  Actually, the 67 DID make sense because I was having low BS symptoms (very shaky, clammy, cold, heart racing) and it came on suddenly.  I would not have tested otherwise.  Why would I drop just from eating tuna, mayo, and one cup of green beans?  I feel like my blood sugars are so wacky the last week or so!  I was never like this prior to two weeks ago.  Knew what I could eat and not eat.  Just stayed away from sugar and too much sugar alcohols and never ate carbs alone.  What the heck happened to me?  LOL.  The only thing that has changed as of late is that I got laid off from my job one month ago.  I am wondering if the stress of that threw my body "out of whack".

I just did a Google search of "can stress affect your blood sugar". Try it, lots of info came up and I think you would find it interesting. Basically the answer is YES.

I did Google that and saw lots of info.  Most of it said that stress would raise the blood sugar.  I guess it could lower it.  I still do not understand why I had a drop with tuna and green beans.  How do I know what to eat?  I can't just eat string cheese all day!  Right now, that seems to be the only thing that doesn't make my blood sugar go crazy.  I used to love eating a variety of foods.  Now I don't know what to do.

I am definitely not an expert, but I can tell you that with my hypoglycemia, I found that every meal needed to be a combination of protein and a few carbs.  Meals with zero carbs sometimes cause me to feel "off"... not quite shaky, nauseous, etc like when I don't eat often enough, but just feeling "icky" (I don't have a BS monitor so don't know what my numbers are at those times).  Stress can cause a lot of things in your body to get wracked out, but I have not read anything about BS being one of those.

I sure hope you can get things back to normal quickly!

Hi Lora! I emailed you. I feel rotten. Even when my blood sugar went back to normal, I'm still getting hot and cold flashes and feel so "off". Maybe you're right about not ENOUGH carbs but I don't know. I'm scared to eat but I am eating. I just ate a string cheese and I'm trying a protein bar. I feel like my head is "buzzy" and my insides are shaky. I don't know why I would crash after so little carbs earlier this evening. I couldn't get an appt with the endocrinologist for two weeks. I don't know what to do to feel better.

Also forgot to mention. I didn't even sleep last night because I felt so yucky. Even when my blood sugar level goes back to normal, my heart is still racing and has been racing all day.
