Katrina aka Mrs Buddha

My story huh?

I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, and I lived there till I was 14. We moved when my mom remarried again. Not to say that like it's a bad thing, I love my stepfather and my siblings very much. Do I miss FL? Sometimes. My dad, stepmom, stepbrothers, and other family members still live there, but I also like where I live now.

I went to several different schools before settling at NKU. I got my BA in Criminal Justice in 2005 and I'm currently planning on going for my MBA starting next year maybe. At one time I was going to go to law school and fight for abused children, but I'm afraid I could never handle the stress or leave my work at the office and have it spill into my family life.

I've been heavy all my life. I was an 11 pound baby! My mom was never very big, or my grandmother, until later in life. And several of my sisters are not overweight at all. We all deal with PCOS, but not everyone has the weight problem. I've tried diets, probably since I was a pre-teen. Everyone always blamed my mother for letting me eat what I wanted when I wanted (even though it wasn't always the case) or me for "sneaking" food and such. Of course like many others, we didn't know what PCOS was or how the insulin resistance effected us. Since I've started looking into weight loss as a real grown up, I've tried some diets. Atkins always worked the best, but I love rice and bread and it never lasted longer than a few months.

Currently, I work for an international investment firm and I've worked here since 06/05. I'm in my second job at the same company and I plan to stay here for a while. The most recent raise we got was helpful too. I am unmarried, but dating a fellow WLS patient and I share a 2 BR/2 BA apartment with one of my sisters. We have different schedules so it's really an ideal situation. I have started to date someone pretty seriously, but it was unexpected. Just kinda looked at each other after a friendly hug and went.."huh"..I wonder. And that was that. I love him dearly. There've been a few serious relationships over the years, and funny enough, none of my ex's have been heavy at all.

I am going back to church now and I really enjoy it. We even have a Singles group which I'm a part of. I'm the "oldest" in the group and I've been considering going to the Middlers class which is...not the old fogies LOL but more like the young married couples and familes. I still haven't decided which way to go. But faith is very important and I've missed it. Plus church provides many opportunities to become involved in life again.

Dr. Sonnanstine is my surgeon and I have enjoyed working with him. I've completed all of my classes and testing, but the insurance I was on (Humana HMO) has a strict exemption policy. It's open enrollment time right now so I've switched to HealthFlex which does cover it. So as of 1/2/07 when I see Dr Tom again, I'll be back on track and will get my paperwork filed with the new insurance company. I'm hoping to have the surgery in Feb if I can swing it. Obviously I've had my surgery; it was 2/5/07. So far so good!
