One week post op and back in hospital with an ileus

Nov 22, 2012

Happy Thanksgiving? Not so much!

I want so badly to be home with my family.

Let me back up....two days ago I was sent to the ER by my clinic where I was admitted to the hospital....backing up further...I woke up Tuesday with a hugely distended belly and severe pain I had still passed next to no gas and not had a bowel movement since days before surgery.....Not fun!

After 24+ hours in the ER they finally found a bed for me. I have had every blood test, XRAY, CT scan etc possible and it looks like I have an ileus. This means my digestive track, intestine, colon, bowels etc are all sleeping (temporarily paralyzed) due to he ttrauma from surgery. This happens from time to time with abdominal surgery. The CT scan shows I am chock full from top to bottom literally. They have tried all sorts of methods of removing and getting things moving and all have failed.  Now I have to just sit in hospital on IV with nothing by mouth at all until it wakes up....I asked how long this can take and they have no definitive answers for me. I just have to wait.

My Dr left for Africa right after my surgery so the other team members have my file but I am being looked after by jr non bariatric surgeons and doctors and this upsets me.

I was doing so well and doing everything right. Complications do arrise and this is one.....One that I was not made aware of before surgery to my knowledge. But they happen.

I wish all my American friends a happy and healthy Thanksgiving! Be thankful for your health and being with the ones you love today.
