One week from today we're getting on the plane for Little Rock! I sent the final payment last week, so all that's left to do is show up. I tell family and friends I'm confident and optimistic, and that's mostly how I feel. But there's also a strong undercurrent of fear and doubt, causing me to snap at my wife and behave badly in other ways. This is going to be a long week for all of us! A few months ago my brother, who is about the same height & weight as me, signed on for a one-year hypnotherapy course ("Positive Changes") and he has been losing weight like gangbusters. The process is helping him develop the habit of daily exercise as well as eating the right foods. I hope that this will work for him long-term, but we both have had similar successes in the past, attaining a semi-normal weight for one brief, shining moment, then rocketing back to (and past) our old weight soon after. It's not that I wish him anything but sucess, but at the same time, seeing a non-surgical alternative working so well for my own brother only adds to the nagging doubts about my choice. I'm sure we all go through this - I'm just surprised at how unnerving some of this stuff can be. Bottom line, though, is that I spent over a year of research and soul-searching before coming to the decision to have the surgery. Absolutely nothing has worked for me long-term in the past, including hypnosis, and there is no doubt in my mind that this is the only option left for me other than giving up and waiting to die. And I'm not ready to do that just yet. Little Rock, here I come!

Many, many thanks to all of you who have sent your thoughts, prayers and advice regarding my upcoming surgery date. Thanks to your support, I found the strenght to say "no" to a surgeon and location I did not feel very good about. Dr. Perea has only done 7 RNY's. That, combined with the fact that my wife could not come to Mexico with me, was enough to make a drastic change. So.... New surgeon, Dr. Ozment at St, Vincent Obesity Center in Little Rock. The cost is $15,000 rather than $11,500, but in every other way this is a much, much better choice. I actually felt a stone being lifted from my heart as I made the changes. New surgery date, too, but only a couple of weeks later. September 23 is now the big day. Thanks again to all of you for the thought and kindness you extended while I made this terribly difficult decision.

Steve - Best wishes for an uneventful surgery and a speedy recovery. May God hold you and your surgery team in his precious hands. Will be interested in hearing about your Mexico experience - I'm heading to Ensenada for surgery with Dr. Aguirre in November.
