I started this process at the end of June 2007. My insurance said I had to attempt to diet for six months and then apply to have the surgery approved. The summer I lost no weight at all. Then I was given a medication for migraines and lost approximately 50 pounds leading up to my surgery date. The time frame was from the end of November to the end of February so in 2 and a half months I lost that weight and was ready to move forward since my eating had gone down considerably and my size had shrunk as well.

I am in my fourth week post op now and considering what I have to do to ensure that this surgery is a success. I have told my family and friends I am giving up drinking for the next year to ensure success and my goal is to diet and live like I have the restrictions of the gastric bypass. For me I want to do no sweets, fried, or overly fatty foods to give my body the maximum loss it can achieve during this first year.

Each day is a challenge with getting enough protein and water, but my goal is 60 for both anything above that is just extra. I am so excited to be sleeping without my sleep apnea machine and getting real rest for the first time in years. I am off my blood pressure meds and keep a healthy b.p. I have also not had a migraine since after surgery when I came off the meds for that as well. I don’t attribute my migraines to my weight, but the meds for them was quite disturbing physiologically.

For the record my highest weight pre-surgery was the 382 I reached after Thanksgiving which is the last for several things. The last time my weight is going to be that high (in Jesus name). The last time I am going to cook such a large and diverse meal to accommodate my West Indian husband, my diabetic and dialysis challenged grandfather, and the rest of us who just wanted a meal. Also the last time I cringe at getting on the scale.

My surgery date was February 27, 2008. The following week my mother had the surgery, and on April 1st my aunt will follow suit and have the surgery as well. I chose lap-band because I want to control my life and my eating and this is my tool. I won’t share to much about my goals going forward, but I am currently 28 pounds from having lost 100lbs and I will learn my tool and use it wisely to get there. Each day is a challenge and with Gods help I am meeting that challenge.
