Hi my name is Javier, I made 27 yrs old this January and I am from Houston Texas. I am currently a fulltime college student and a part time Nurse Assistant at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in the Texas Medical Center. Been at the Luke since I was 17 years old and it’s the best place to work at.

For me the weight gain began when I was about 14 or 15 years old and it escalated from there. At 18 years old I was about 290-300lbs. From there till now my weight has fluctuated between 300 and 350lbs. My highest weight ever was 361.

About 3 years ago I began researching weight-loss surgery it was definitely an option for me. I actually had the ball rolling as far as the surgery was concerned. One day at an information session that I was asked to attend by the doc. we were handed a pre-op diet/guide for the few weeks before the surgery. It was not mandatory and it was not a specific plan. It was mainly a list of what not to eat and what healthy choices we had. After trying this diet for a month, I lost nearly 50 pounds. I was shocked and felt pretty good about it. Mainly because I had lost the weight using the guide and I wasn’t exercising at all. This gave me a reality check and made me step back and re-analyze my decision. Had I really done everything to loose weight?

For the next couple of years after that I went on a journey to better my life and my health. I had decided to try everything I could get my hands on to loose weight. Books, diet plans, exercise, trainers, gym memberships, lifestyle change coach, training with friends, alone… etc. And for the most part it did work, but I kept loosing the same 40-50 pounds again and again.

For a minute I even forgot about the surgery and felt pretty bad about still being in the same weight range. Little by little I began to reevaluate my life and reminded myself that I deserved to be healthy. Now I could honestly say that I had tried my best and just needed a little extra help.

My surgery was scheduled on May 17th 2012 and I have to say that is was a great personal experience. And loosing 20 pounds in the 2 weeks right after surgery makes it even better. My doctor is Dr. Jason Ballete from The Surgical Group of The Woodlands. He is an amazing and neat surgeon, and has a great bedside manner.
