I am currently waiting for a date for the Verticle Sleeve surgery.  I am 44 years old and because of my work (psychologist) I have known dozens of people who have had weight loss surgery---some have been successful and some have not.  Despite all my knowledge, I cannot help myself to lose weight, nor can i determine what makes one person successful with something  like the Lap Band and another abuse the band and their bodies and regain weight.  i was a relatively happy fat person until 1 1/2 years ago when i herniated a cervical disk in my nek which led to a downward spiral in my health in almost every way imaginable including triggering the onset of diabetes (would have happened eventually anyway but the injury made it BAD).  This past year has been a roller coaster of illnesses, pain, surgeries and recoveries. Now its time to get serious about my weight problem.  If I can get my weight under control, I can probably reverse this diabetes and avoid all the otehr complications that can come with diabetes.

I have a BMI of 40 right now.  I am NOT looking forward to another period of medical incapacitation, but its not like I'd doing so great right now anyway.   I am the primary breadwinner for my family and missing more work will be a real hardship.  I am hoping that the sedentary nature of my job will allow me back to work relatively quickly.

ALERT: That Intro was 11+ years ago. 6 weeks after my VSG surgery my husband began dying of melanoma that had metastasized to  his brain. We had 13 brutal months before the inevitable. I lost 33 pounds in 6 weeks, then sat in hospitals and lost myself along with everything in the world because of our "poster family for healthcare reform" nightmare. I gained 15 pounds back, then took that off, and am presently just 1 or 2 pounds away from that original 33 pound weight loss.  My sleeve was done in the early days but it still restricts when I make the right food choices (had a swallow test confirming all is fine). I'm a lot older, have many more health problems, and its riskier if I choose surgery again. It seems the new SIPS or SADI-S surgery is the next step but I have no idea if insurance covers this. No insurance paid for my VSG 3/2008. I just learned that a doctor at Hackenack Hospital is doing SIPS surgery which is MUCH more convenient for me than seeing Dr. Roslin at Lenox Hill where I can't even get an appointment until I go to one of their Tuesday at 5:30 pm Intro to Weigfht Loss Surgery Seminars. Guess they don't want patients from outside immediate Manhatten. WOW its weird to be back here, this time widowed 9.5 years. Just surviving.
