Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital

"my pain was not managed adequately. the nurses DID tell the Dr i was saying my pain was severe, but the intern (Dr) did not respond adequately. i had a shared room and my side of the room (and the bathroom)were both so small that it could barely be maneuvered. i was too sick to care much, but was concerned my moaning would bother my room mate. they are in the process of building a new facility with all private rooms. it usually took about 20 minutes for a call light to be answered, but all the staff on every unit was kind and genuinely concerned about my well being. there are many volunteers helping out as well."

David Thoman

"Dr Thoman is an excellent surgeon, however he never came out to tell my sister how i did during surgery, or that i was out of the OR. When she tracked him down all he said was 'it went fine' not mentioning that he did a hernia repair. We found this out when it was offhandedly mentioned by an intern. My pain was very poorly controlled during the first 3 days of my surgery. I was told i would be given a PCA but was not, and the medications wore off before the next dose was due over and over. This misery could easily have been avoided if more attention had been paid to my comfort. After those first three days i am pleased with my recovery, and i expect to have good long term results. His office staff is very helpful. The pre op program and post op support is excellent and Dr Thoman/Cottage hospital are a center of excellence. One more goof up worth mentioning. My DC instructions contained 3 contradictions on when i can bath, and no instructions on 'lifting precautions'. I was not allowed to read the DC instructions before i left 'i am giving you a copy and you can read it later' i was told by the nurse."
