I survived!!!

Jul 19, 2009

Hello everyone and thank you to those of you who left me messages and sent your prayers.

Wow, I can't believe I have finally made it to mountain top!  Now I am looking over it and praying everything else continues to go well.  My few days prior to my surgery which was on 7/14/09 were very hectic.  I was trying to finish up last minute work requests, transition into a new job, my dad had a colonscopy the day before. my little sister who is bipolar had a breakdown and was hospitalized the same day and me and my family have been running ever since.

I was told to be at the hospital by 10:00am at Atlanta Medical Center, which I was, with my mom, 78 yr old grandma (who was not going to let me go without her) and my 20 yr old son in tow.  The ride was good and we arrived to a packed waiting room or other people who were there for surgery for that day.  I was quickly called back and prep for the surgery and was left in the room while the nurse went to bring my family back.  This was about 10:30am.  Well my family came back and sat around for hours before we finally had the nurse go and check to see when I would be going down.  After another long spell the nurse says that they are sending someone up now to get me and it shouldn't be much longer.  The handsome, nice smelling male nurse came to retrieve us about 2:10 and took me and my family down to surgery area and the patient family waiting room.  Finally my loved one's were situated and could go and get some lunch while I went off to surgery.  No one had had any breakfast or lunch and I was getting worried and frustrated.  After we said out goodbye's  I was taken back to the surgery waiting area where I went thru yet again another round of the same questions I had already been asked up stairs by the RN who checked me in.  I was told that they had some complications with some other's surgeries.. not necessarily Bariatric and that was the reason for my delays.

Well 4:00 finally rolls in and about 4:20 I was finally rolled into my surgery room, given my knock out drugs and I don't remember a thing after that until some nurse was yelling at my to breathe in the spirometer in my room where I vaguely remember my family standing over me.  So I figured I made it out ok.  That was about 6:00 or 6:30 I think, not really sure.  My grandma ended of staying with me at the hospital because she didn't want me to stay alone and she just wasn't happy that I was coherent enough to know what was going on ...(so I was told).. so my son and mom left to get some much needed Rest.

They got me out of bed about 1:30am the same night and I walked twice around the hospital floor.  I out walked the Nurse.. who was about 7 months pregnant...so it was no huge accomplishment.  But I didn't stop there.. I walked again at 6:00 and 7:00am and by the time they brought breakfast I was walking againg.  I was determined to go home and wanted to walk as much as I could to regain my strength and composure to get out of the hospital.  Those heparin shots in the belly and insulin shots for my sugar were taking its toll on me especially cause I am not big on pain and needles...!!!!  The PA for my surgeon came in and saw me and was happy to hear and see me walking.  He said my surgery went very well.. and my stomach was a little smaller than  most..something in the range of ml.. not even the 3 oz pouch I was expecting.. I was surprised about that.. He said I should loose alot of weight and that gives me room to stretch it a little too without it being too big later.  At that point I really didn't care... I just wanted to hear the majic phrase of " Your going home today" which he did say as long as I was able to tolerate my breakfast with no problem that I could go home today.  Which of course I did.

Needless to say I made it home about 8:00 that evening ......Sheww..... well, I will update more as I can.  I am at my aun't home using her pc to make this update.  I hope to be back at my home by Tuesday so I can give more periodic updates on my recouperation.  Oh yeah.. when I went to hosptial on 7/14/09 I was 235.6 lbs.  When I weighed today I was 226 lbs.  Not sure if that's good or not but atleast the number is not staying the same or going up...lol

I will take it.. esepecially since it hasn't been a full week yet!  AGain.. thank you all for all your support!
