BMI of 31?

Hi everyone! I was sleeved a little over a month ago, and my mom, who has also struggled with her weight her whole life is now considering WLS.

My question is, she is 5'4" and has a BMI of 31. Has anyone else had WLS at this size? I guess because I'm sooo overweight and it took me to get to 280 to finally decide on surgery, I feel like she's jumping into this even though I know she's been considering it for years.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

As far as I know there is no insurance company that will pay for WLS for someone whose BMI is less then 35 with comorbidities.  That doesn't mean she wouldn't be able to find someone if she self paid, probably out of the country.
There was talk about lowering the BMI requirements to 30 but I think that was mainly to get insurance to pay for the lap band.  Not sure if they ever did that.

What Tazz said. She could go to Mex or Brazil and easily get a sleeve at 31 BMI. You might want to ask specifically for names and contact info on vetted sleeve surgeons in Mex, you don't want her to get an unscrupulous surgeon.

Hi Masstactic!  I haven't been sleeved yet (March 12th) but I am going to Mexico and my BMI is 31.  I know I'm not on the high end but even the extra 60 or 70 lbs can be a real life struggle.  I wish you and your mom the best.  I am so excited about the decision to have the sleeve!

I have the sleeve and got it with a 31 bmi.  I paid out of pocket, and went with Aceves.  I love my sleeve and I am 1 year out.  I did not share my surgery with many because of being a light weight.  I have no regrets.  My physician here in indy took care of all of my aftercare and I've had no problems.  Good luck!

Congrats on your surgery and weight loss!!   You must be doing really well or your Mom might not be considering WLS.

My DD has gained a lot of weight this past year.  She is 4'11" and probably has a 29 BMI right now but I see how miserable she is.   She keeps starting and stopping diets and with each one a few more pounds appear.  I can so see myself in her and I hope that if she gains much more she will consider at least getting the band.
