Plateau...How do I break it one year out?

It's been a year since my surgery and I have been at a stand still for about 3 months now.  I've lost 85 lbs but still have 20 more to go until I reach my goal weight.  I'm struggling to make this happen.  Does anyone have a trick to kick start the process?

I'm at 8 months out and hit a wall with about 30lbs left to go.  Now is the time to be honest with yourself.  I know I have picked up a couple habits that I didn't have the first 6 months from the start.  My food intake was 2-3oz, then 4-5oz so I'm flat out eating more.  I've also returned to going out more than I should.  Being able to eat out felt "normal" and nice to get out after 4 months of not going out, however regardless of your choices you can't measure it, you don't know exactly what they used to make it, so counting it is hard.  On that note if your not counting and weighing get back on that.  Double check the types of foods your eating too, I was eating only turkey for lunch meat but now have ham, and roast beef at the house.  Those are small extra calories that slow things down too.

Anyway I bet if you compare what your eating now it's not the same at the first 6 months.  You might have walked more, or weighed your food more, or been more diligent about something.

Excellent answer. It amazes me how many people dig their heels in and REFUSE to accept they are eating more.

I totally am! I can look back and see me eating about 400 calories, then 600, then 800, I'm at 800-1000 now.  It's way more than the good ol days of OMG why did I take 3oz of this soup... I can't finish this LOL.

But Im ok with it, I'm up doing a ton more stuff, I'm active, and enjoying my life as a far more active bodied person.  That scale will move and I'm ok with things slowing down, if I get in a hurry I know moving back to 800 will do it.

It's hard to give advice without knowing what you are currently doing in terms of diet and exercise. Here's what I do when I need to switch into weight loss mode after going off the rails a little bit:

--spend three days eating nothing but lean, unprocessed meat (no jerky, sausage, bacon, deli meats), green veggies, and healthy fats. I do not track calories or restrict intake. Thanks to Kairk for this tip!

--the next three days, eat the same foods but weigh/measure all my portions and track them in MyFitnessPal. Make sure I am in a caloric deficit.*

--After these three days, expand menu to include fruit (not tropical fruit), tree nuts, dairy, and beans/legumes. No grains, no starchy veggies, no tropical fruit, no sweets, no liquid calories. Continue to weigh/measure all portions and track on MyFitnessPal.

--Get at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise 5 days per week, but do not count calories burned or attempt to "eat back" burned calories.

*My maintenance calorie range is right around 1500 per day. If you don't know yours, start with a guesstimate of 10 calories per pound of current weight. So if you weigh 170, assume your maintenance calories are 1700 per day. To lose a pound a week, eat 500 calories under your maintenance range per day, so max calories would be 1200.

If you are already doing all of this and not losing weight, you might give 5/2 intermittent fasting a try -- I found doing that for a couple of weeks helped me break some plateaus along the way. Good luck!

No trick, but going back to basics always works! Yes, we can definitely eat more at a year out, but as long as you're continuing eating the things you're supposed to eat, an increase in portion size shouldn't stall you completely.

Are you prioritizing protein and eating minimal carbs? Drinking over 64oz of water a day? Logging your food? Weighing portions?

I'm 13 months out and haven't stalled yet when I've been eating according to the above rules, even with an increase in capacity. I also eat out a decent amount, but stick to that high protein/low carb rule, even when I can't measure. The carbs I do get are mainly from veggies and dairy.

You can definitely knock those last 20 lbs. off!

If you've been at the same weight for three months then you're eating as many as calories as your body is burning.  If you want to lose more weight, you'll need to cut back calories.  It really is that simple.
