Need advice please

I'm 6 weeks out from my surgery date and in the soft foods phase. At my last check-in on Friday, the nutritionist said to add in a low carb tortilla and crackers.

Edit: Not sure why half my message got cutoff...

These items were items I indulged in previously, so I'm worried about adding what may be a trigger food. When I asked the nutritionist this, I was met with a blank stare.

I'm a rule follower, but I wonder if this is a rule I can ignore for now?

I'd worry that all those carbs will trigger your cravings. I didn't add low-carb tortillas until I was in maintenance - and I found myself craving carbs and I had to cut them out again.

Perhaps you will react differently, but I don't think its the best choice!

I only followed my nuts advice during the liquid and soft food phases. Her philosophy was you could pretty much eat what you wanted after meeting your protein goal first, not to count calories, but to go by portion sizes and total grams of sugar, carbs, etc. I fortunately read this forum religiously and learned from the verterans that they did best by meeting protein goals first, counting calories and cutting out carbs and sugars (except for the small amounts in vegetables or fruit). I am sure my nuts plan works, but I am a carb addict and did not want to wake up the carb monster. (Since processed carbs are not in my system, I do not crave them, but if I have them, then I crave them and have to give it about a week of no carbs before the cravings stop). By following the advice of the veterans and counting calories, eating protein, then having very, very small amount of vegetables or fruit has allowed me to lose 100 lbs in less than a year. I am a rule follower too, but I didn't have this surgery to risks regain down the road. I take my vitamins daily and my blood work is fine. You must do whatever works for you in the long run. Good luck to you!

Low Carb Tortillas and crackers, hmmm? My advice:

IGNORE!

That advice is not going to work for you, if those foods are trigger foods. Those foods won't help you get to goal any quicker either.

I think it is wonderful that you are very cognizant of your trigger foods. Avoid your trigger foods! You do not "need" to eat tortillas or crackers. With that said please know that I did use Torano low carb tortillas for sandwiches when the itch came around and I use Fibergourmet crackers regularly. But, these are not my trigger foods. I can't keep Artic Zero ice cream, for example, despite the profile being fairly on plan. I will eat that and then jones for the real deal and struggle. I can do protein bars, but others can't. It is a little different for all of us other than if it is a trigger food keep it the heck out of your house and your life!

Thank you all, I really appreciate your advice! I'm definitely going to trust your advice and my gut on this one, and avoid these types of items. I'm really working hard on changing my relationship with food, and these items are just too dangerous for me at this point.

Thanks again!!

Danger, danger, Will Robinson! (You may be too young to get that reference)

This would probably be an OK suggestion for a "normal" eater...but most of us on here, and most who have had WLS, are not normal by any stretch of the imagination. First off, you don't need those extra carbs - they aren't adding a ton of nutritional value at this point.

Second, if you "indulged" in them prior to WLS they are sure to be trigger. And you will want more and more of them.

Ignore her suggestion for now. Add them back in maintenance and see what happens but don't sabotage you're losing power now.
