Assistance Post Op? How much is TOO MUCH?

Hi everyone,

I live alone and am arranging for my sister to stay with me once I get home from surgery.  Keep in mind she only lives 1.5 miles away from my house.  How long after surgery do you need someone with you 24 hours a day (or do you)?  She is willing to take time off of work but with 2 kids, I don't want to waste her PTO if I really don't need it.

Thanks!

My husband was home with me for one day. I really didn't need him. I could do everything for myself. I just hung around sipping water and walking in the hallway.

I live alone and I didn't need anyone for even a minute after I got home from the hospital. I made sure all the heavy-lifting type tasks were done right before my surgery -- changing the kitty litter, laundry, yard work -- so I didn't need to worry about them right away. I was moving slower than normal and napping a lot but I was perfectly capable of taking care of myself and my pets (2 cats, 1 large-ish dog).

My mom lives with me and the most she did was make me a bowl of jello :)

I guess it depends on how long you are in the hospital and how you react to surgery.  I was in 2 nights after surgery.  When I got home, I did not need any assistance.  I had zero complications and very little pain.

My wife had the same surgery a year later and she had similar results as mine.

You just need to have someone drive you home from the hospital.

Your message is encouraging. I lost 50lbs on WW and gained back 34lbs. I have since lost 12lbs.  I am scheduled for surgery this Friday. I am trying to focus on positive feedback just to keep my spirit high. I am 5ft 3 and weigh 206 with severe joint knee pain and sleep apnea. I need to lose 70lbs to 80lbs.  Thanks so much

The only thing you may need help with is lifting. I was told nothing over the weight of a gallon of milk for 8 weeks. I had someone carry a laundry basket up and down 2 flights of stairs a couple of times, and that was it.

Personally, I was happier being alone than having someone hover.

I kicked the laundry baskets down the basement stairs then used barbecue tongs to pick the clothes off the floor.
