Weight Gain 5 months post op.
WHAT THE HELL!!! I am 5 months post op, i will be starting 6 months as of Aug 19th and ive gained 7 lbs. OKAY! Heres the thing. I've been eating sushi for the past maybe week, pretty much only sushi. California rolls with the cream cheese imitation crab rice and avocado. I know we shouldnt be eating carbs but can that rice really make me gain that much? I have barely lost weight this month and ended up gaining. NO i am not exercising either, but I am starting on the 19th. I plan to do more juicing and exercising. My diet since surgery has been pretty much to the T of the recommonedations, ive never eaten anything on the "DO NOT eat list". I typically have protein drinks and different vegetarian meals but this past month i think i've just been being a bad girl? Is it possible to gain weight at 5 months out? Has this happened to anyone before? Have i stretched my stomach? How much are you eating with your sleeve at 5 months? So many questions. I think I can eat about 4 oz now, but i want to go back down to 2 I dont want to be able to eat large amounts! Anyway, would love to hear your responses.
Allow me to also add, i still eat fast! It does not take me 30 mins to eat food, and sometimes i dont wait 30 mins before or after eating. Could this be causing issues as well? I dont eat fast food or any junk food i have literally just been eating rice. Im also wondering would the RNY have been better? At least i would get sick after the rice?
Well I don't think you could bank on RNY making you sick from the rice.
My understanding is that carbs in the body do cause you to hold onto more water -- this is why in Atkins induction phase you drop SO much weight quickly -- most of it is water. So the 5 lbs could be your body picking up the water because you added the rice.
Are you still getting enough protein & water?
If you are still trying to lose, I would cut out the rice or at minimum switch to brown rice.
YES! I have about 175 left to lose lol Started out pretty heavy. I plan on cutting out the rice completely. I am wondering if other people have gained weight so early into the journey after surgery. I did not know that carbs cause you to hold on to water weight. I am drinking at least 32 oz of water a day. I always strive for more and i have to gett better than that but i never have less than 32. I am also doing okay with my protein. I used to monitor like crazy but not so much this past month. Could that also be contributing to the weight gain or slow weight loss?
I am 4 months out and I try to get the protein in first and limit carbs to 20-30 per day. I started working out 3 months post op. I walk and do weights. Walking 30-60 minutes per day is 5-7 days per week and weights are 3-4 days per week for 30 minutes.
I love sushi but now I eat sashimi with just maybe a tablespoon or 2 of rice. According to spark people, 3 pieces of california roll is 120 calories, 28 grams of carbs and only 3 grams of protein. I cannot say I would eat those during the loss phase.
Depending on the food, I can eat 3-5 ounces per meal. Chicken fills me up fast.

Thank you for your response! What kind of cardio are you doing? I am going to start working out I am just scared to start becaue it was such a challenge when i was heavier. I am afraid to hit a wall and realize i cannot do something. But i will start because i am determined.
I do not meat so I use tofu or beans or protein shakes to get in my protein its not as dense as chicken or say steak. Typically I am having about 10 pieces of sushi and that is my meal for the entire day. A few peices here a few peices there ya know? about 4 pieces in a sitting and i feel so fat and feel like "whoa is my stomach stretched"! I guess i just need to do more measuring to determine how many ounces i actually can eat. I dont ever want to get to a normal sized stomach again. Lol
Everyone's body is different, and it sucks that you gain 7 pounds after eating sushi for a month--but not really all that surprising. If you're eating 10 pieces of sushi a day, that's 650 calories right there without counting the calories that you may be getting from your vitamin supplements (typically, my supplements are about 130 calories per day).
All that sushi is only giving you about 3g protein, so to get in the rest of your protein--lets just say the minimum of 60g/day--you're also drinking at least two protein shakes a day at about 160 calories each, so add 320 calories to your 650 sushi and 130 calories supplements, and already you're talking 1,000 calories a day.
This is not a smart way of going about losing weight following weight loss surgery. You know what you have to do.
