Water before and after meals? *newb alert*

Hi guys, I'm new here and still in the research phase of my journey.  I've read that with the sleeve you can only drink half an hour before or after your meal.  Is this just post-op or forever?

Thanks!

Post op is forever :)  Eventually, you will be able to drink after or with meals. Timetable will vary depending on your recovery and what you are eating. The concept is to never eat with your meal. You want your protein to fill your sleeve and leave you with a feeling of satisfaction or fullness. Drinking can wash your food through your stomach causing hunger to return earlier and allowing for excess calorie intake.

Use the magnifying glass to search for Frisco's post about the Pyloric valve 101.

You really shouldn't drink WITH meals...

You've got it slightly backward.  You -can't- drink a half an hour before a meal.  I drink up until right before I eat which, based on my knowledge of how the pyloric valve works, is a fine thing to do and when I asked my NUT about this, she agreed.  But not drinking during or after a meal is a forever thing.

Drinking before meals = okay

Why?  Fluids pass right through the pyloric valve.  The valve will slam shut when dense protein is in the stomach.

Drinking after meals = wait 30 minutes or more.  Longer is better.  Personally, I wait 45 minutes to an hour after eating to begin drinking again.  I learned that 30 minutes was simply not enough time for me but everyone is different.

And as someone else said, post-op IS forever.

It's actually a myth.  Sadly, many surgeon's staff lump all wls into one group and don't bother to differentiate.

The RNY and Lapband patients cannot drink during or after eating because the fluids can flush the food out of their pouch, rendering them hungry again.  Having a sleeve stomach (not a pouch), all working parts are present and active, including the plyoric valve, which controls food's entry to the digestive system.

The worst that drinking with or after a meal will do for us with sleeve stomachs is make us full.  There's no harm at all.

I didnt know you could drink right up to eating. I have been waiting a half hour after drinking, eat, and then waiting a half hour or more to start drinking again. Thanks for clearing this up.
