Heparin shots post-op?
Hi everyone. I'm Esme and due for surgery on 7/28; getting VSG. I have a friend who is also getting the sleeve on 7/22 and I went to her preop appt yesterday for support. She has to take heparin shots for 2 weeks after surgery, 2x a day. We both have different surgeons and my doc only does a shot before and after surgery. Did anyone else have to take blood thinners after surgery? Is this the norm? Should I be worried that I'm not going to be taking them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)
I had like one before surgery and 2 after while in the hospital. Nothing once I went home 48 hours later.

I think it depends on your history and what your surgeon feels you need. I only had a shot the day of surgery and day after. I went in on Tuesday and came home late Thursday. The doctor even said I was up moving a lot and I didn't have any red flags in my background.
I would caution you , Be careful comparing you and your friend during this journey. I know it's going to be hard especially with you both having it close together! It's great having a shoulder to lean on , but with different surgeons you both might have different eating plans and such. You both might be on different phases at different times. That's just my 2 cents take it for what it's worth.
Good luck during your journey, you are almost there.
They talked about putting me on them because I had a blood clot once but decided not to since my blood clot was hormonal related.

Hi, I'm 16 days VSG post op and I had to be on the blood thinning shots (Lovenox) because of my predisposition for blood clots. I suspect that your friend may have some predisposition as well which is why they have to take the shots. From what I know about blood clots and their treatment, if the doctor can narrow down what caused the blood clot like hormones then they don't go with a full blown treatment for prevention. Unfortunately that was not the case for me. On a happier note I just got off the shots on Monday because my INR was too high... No more human pin cushion!
Good luck to both of you!
