Why chicken dark meat? And what about caffeine?

Hi. I've noticed. Lot of people post dark meat chicken in their meals. I am wondering why that and not chicken breasts.

Also, my nutritionist said no caffeine. Do you all follow that no caffeine rule? When I get headaches that respond to caffeine. I have gone off of it all, but would love to have some in moderation.

Thanks

The theory is that dark meat is moister than white meat, and therefore sleeve friendly.  Cafine produces acid in the tummy- not so good early on.  My program let me introduce it in moderation at about 3-4 months and I enjoy some most days with no problem.  As always- follow the directives of your program...I'm olny relating my experience- Bonnie

I eat both white and dark meat chicken. I never heard of the reason for dark meat being easier for the sleeve to handle..but it makes sense. Learn something new every day! :-)

As for caffeine, on my recommended eating plan..it was never restricted. Just recommended to avoid caffeine/coffee for the first couple of weeks after surgery as it could produce wicked heartburn. I slowly started to introduce coffee about a month post op. Now I have my regular cup of coffee every morning with no problems.

I'd agree about the chicken thing being tied to how restrictive your sleeve is. I eat breast meat more often than not, but both chicken and pork, if overcooked, are hard to get down and sit heavy/very restrictive for me. My program prefers no caffeine. I did that for a long while, but now I blend half full caffeine and half decaf for my own half caf! I've had no issues. I have also taken to using Flax seed milk instead of cow's milk. And I use my peanut butter protein in one of my cups as a monring snack.

I drank coffee from just a few days out of surgery up to now (5 weeks) and I have not had any issues.  They say early on they worry about dehydration or appetite stimulation...I didn't want to give up my morning joe and I didn't.  I haven't had any issues.  Dark meat goes down easier :)

I now can have coffee, was allowed at 3 monthes but have to say I don't drink it after noon only if it is decaffeined. IT keeps me up at night. I prefer the taste of dark meat. to me chicken breast is dry and boring. Not had much luck cooking it.

Dark meat tends to be more moist and go down easier. Breast meat tends to dry out easily if overcooked... As for the caffeine, there has been a long-standing theory that caffeine causes dehydration, but recent studies show that this does not hold true. My surgeon offered me coffee the morning after surgery. As long as your caffeine isn't coming from sodas or sugar-laden teas, caffeine shouldn't give you problems. And PLEASE don't go for "diet" or "sugar free" sodas either. Many people can handle carbonation post op, but it just isn't worth getting hooked on artificial sweetners, whose addictiveness has been known to rival that of illegal drugs!

Thank you!!! I have gone off of all carbonation and diet sodas and I feel better-so I won't go back to those! But I do really like coffee-especially the ideas here of mixing protein with it. My team said there is a possibility that caffeine concentrated into a smaller volume of stomach volume could cause harmful effects-but they don't know for sure. I see it as a warning for me not to go overboard. And I have come off of caffeine so I know I can do it. I just don't want to long term!

thanks!!
