I'm sure others can give you a better exercise plan than I, but I'm answering because until recently I did almost no exercise at all. I have never liked exercise, but I have committed to change my ways. Here's what I'm doing:

I joined the YMCA and am taking advantage of their Coach Approach program. This provides me with a coach who interviewed me and came up with a plan based on my health and other needs.  I started slow. The first two weeks, I did nothing other than walk for 10 minutes on the treadmill to warm up and ride the recumbent bike about a mile. The whole workout took about 25 minutes.  In just those 2 weeks I have already built up some stamina. I can go farther and with more resistance on the bike now.  The treadmill, not so much. I have severe arthritis in my left foot and knee and about 10 minutes is my tipping point. This week my coach added some strength training machines, which I really like.

This whole experience has given me the confidence to see that I can do it. I can!  Having a coach keeps me accountable and gives me someone to ask questions of, since I have very little background as an exerciser.

I aim for cardio 3 times per week, strength training with kettlebells 2-3 times and a couple Pilates sessions a week.  I say "aim" because it doesn't always happen, but if I get in 5 days of activity a week, that's good enough for me.
