Lactose Intolerance... WHY???

Anybody know why this happens? It started for me about 3 weeks post op and hasn't stopped - I'm almost in my 5th month. I thought it was getting better because I've been tolerating cheese well, but nope. A little sour cream on top of my (healthy ingredients) homemade chili and BAM. Sick again (and again, and again). What causes this? And does it ever really go away?

That's a bummer. I've heard it can get better or stay.  Hope it gets better for you.

I've heard that yogurt can typically be consumed by those lactose intolerant.  I actually put Fage 0% Greek yogurt on my chili. It tastes exactly like sour cream to me plus is way lower in calories & has way more protein.

Yogurt is a great idea. I hadn't really thought of using it like that. And the probiotic advantages can't hurt either!

I had no clue that this was a possibility, and have mercy.  On a whim I tried Lactaid milk, and it has been a god send for me.  I can handle cheeses and sour cream in small doses, but milk is an absolute no-no.

Hmmm. And you and I are at about the same place post op, too. Poor us! I've been using light "Silk" soy milk and I've come to really like it. It's so strange to me that cheese gives me no trouble, but the sour cream? Yikes! I guess it's just TOO much concentrated dairy. Lactaid tablets work great, I just didn't think to take it this time since I didn't have any trouble with cheese.

it started with me when I was about 6 months out....ugh, I hate it....half of my protein/food was dairy....I can tolerate fage, sometimes, never can tell when it's going to be a good time or not.  and some hard cheeses (esp cheddar) are good.  but forget cottage cheese.    Here's an article that helped me understand.....I still dont' like it, but I understand...

good luck!  and I hope all of those effected grow out of this condition!!

That makes sense, thanks. I'm still confused as to why it doesn't happen to everyone who has WLS though... Oh well. It's just so frustrating!!

Mine came on suddenly and left just suddenly as well. I was a few months post op and developed lactose intoerance. It only lasted a few months and I am ok with it now. There is still hope you will "grow" out of it. I sometimes wwould take lactaid pills but they were very hit or miss with preventing the yuckness! Good luck, I will keep my fingers crossed for you!
