Discussing the unmentionables..

I had read a lot of people say that they wished they would have started their protein earlier before surgery, so last week I started trying out protein shakes to get the hang of it and see what I liked and didn't like.  (Surgery isn't even scheduled yet, so I'm not in my pre-op diet or anything)

Well, I've noticed lately that I seem to get diarrhea within a few hours of having my protein shakes. Is this normal?? Or am I just not getting enough of something else like fiber? It's kind of embarrassing, but it seems like the only thing I can think of would be the increase in protein.

no problem in that area here lol

Do you have any whey, soy, or other intolerances, look at the ingredients in the shake.  That might be what is happening.  Also see if the shake is high in sugar alcohol, that can cause diarrhea.  It wouldn't be fiber, that helps you go when your plugged up.

As far as I know I don't have any intolerances.. but I might have to check that out if this keeps happening!! Thanks!

Sugar alcohols can definitely cause that; quite often things advertised as sugar-free have sugar alcohol in them (like xylitol).  Also, liquids in, liquids out, to be frank.

I'm on day 8 of my pre-op, and I did have this problem the first couple of days.  Somewhere around day 3 or 4, my body adjusted and everything is fine now.

I had problems with protein and now I don't drink them at all. I spent $50 on Isopure and it made me SO SICK!  I was on the toilet the entire next day.  I had the least problems with the ready made in a bottle from Walmart but they are so expensive, $8 for a 4 pack but that's what I used the first few weeks before and after surgery. A lot of us are able to get protein just from food (it ain't easy) but it is possible.

Good luck.
