Another reason to have VSG

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea about 8 years ago.  I had multiple sleep studies where I would stop breathing 39 times per minute, which is considered severe.  I was put on a bi-pap mask that I wore religiously.  When I had lost about 50 lbs, I stopped using it because I felt that I no longer needed it.  I had lost a considerable amount of weight from my neck and felt much better.  My pulmonologist was not happy about my self diagnosis :(
Anyway, I had a repeat sleep study about 2 weeks ago to document that in actuality the sleep apnea was resolved....and it is!!   COMPLETELY GONE!  No signs of apnea whatsoever.
As this is a life threatening condition, I can't begin to tell you what a relief this is.  Not to mention never having to wear the mask again.
Soooo...along with all of the health benefits of losing 126 lbs, getting rid of sleep apnea and dropping my cholesterol from 244 to 140, I have significantly reduced my chances of heart disease and sudden death.
Something to think about if you are on the fence about VSG

Congrats!!  I am so looking forward to hearing the same news - I have been using my BI-pap nightly since 2004 when I had the sleep test before getting my Lapband.  It is a pain in the butt - but - I make sure to use it because it scares me what will happen if I don't.  Right now I am having problems tolerating the increased setting that my pulmonologist just had me make.  I have way too much air being forced into my tummy and chest - so still working on getting the setting right.  Anyway - hoping that this time next year I am BiPap free.

Good for you - I bet you feel freed from lugging the machine around - I hate when we travel - always an extra piece of luggage.

Totally agree with everything you said.  It is the best feeling not being tied to that damn machine!!

Good luck!!

I have sleep apnea and sleep with a CPAP machine.  I was able to stop taking my blood pressure meds pretty quickly but am still sleeping with the machine.  I look forward to getting rid of it.

Congrats to you!
