How to keep carbs low

Hi everyone,

I am one month out, losing slowly (22 lbs).  How do you keep your carbs to 20-40 gms/day?  No matter how hard I try, I can't seem to get below 60 and this is strictly using bariatric recipes.  How do I know if I am in ketosis?
Thanks,
Marie

Generally speaking, to keep carbs low cut out ALL white or processed food. That means no potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, or the stuff you get in a package. Processed packaged food is crap anyway and this is your opportunity to cut it out completely.

Ketosis - go to the drug store and buy some ketone strips. You pee on one and if it turns a certain color you're in ketosis. Or not.

Thanks for the advice, Wert.  I do not eat ANY white foods--everything you listed above.  I'm going to get the ketone strips today.
Thanks,
Marie

What are you eating at one month out with those kinds of carbs? If you want to lower your carbs, you need to see what the source is and then get rid of them. My carbs are around 60 but im 4 mo out. Not all bariatric recipes are designed for new -new pre-ops.

Yeah, you're really not far enough out to be eating that many carbs.  Just STRICTLY eat protein. . . eggs, cheese,  chicken, fish.  It's really not that hard.  The only carbs I ate early on were a few that were in my protein shakes, that's it.   I lost 100 pounds in the first 6 months :)  Of course, you can CHOOSE to eat a lot of carbs; you just won't lose as fast. . . and the REAL problem is: you probably are substituting those for the protein you SHOULD be eating.  Concentrate on getting in more protein, and you'll be fine .

Hi Thin!

The carbs ARE mostly coming from my shakes.  I do not choose to eat any extra carbs--trying to avoid them like the plague!!  I wasn't getting in enough protein thru food, so the shakes were really amping up my carb count.  The shakes were making me so full (for like 4 hours at a time) so I wasn't eating enough because then I was concentrating on my water intake.  Some days I had 3 shakes which were 60 carbs right there.
I add Unjury unflavored protein to my water and all food so that now I'm down to one shake a day.
Thanks!
Marie

I am on soft foods.  I eat chicken, egg, tuna and crab salad with low fat mayo. I also eat hard boiled eggs and scrambled eggs.  I just discovered that I can replace the mayo with Greek yogurt so I will be doing that in the future.
I think the mistake I've made is I've been using recipes from egg face and maybe it was too soon.  Also, the only protein shake I can tolerate is Ensure High Protein which has 20 gm carbs and I was having 2 of them a day.  So there's 40 gms right there!  I  found that I can tolerate the Unjury unflavored protein so I've been adding that to all of my food/water so I can get off the shakes all together.
Thanks for the advice!

I agree with thin1.  There are plenty of "hidden carbs" so at this stage concentrate on protein.  I avoid breads, rice, potatoes.  I eat mostly protein to get in the 80 to 100 grams a day.  Carbs in protein bars and shakes and yogurt and cheese are the only carbs I get.  Start reading every label before you buy anything.  You'll be suprised.  My doc and nut have never mentioned ketosis.  I'm probably in ketosis but I don't worry about it.  The urine test strips are easy to use and read if you want to find out where you are.  I think 22lbs is pretty good, but work on the carb decrease and get enough protein and water and you should see an improvement.
