What are the best vitamins and calcium for RYN? I have RYN 5 yrs ago and maintained but I've very tired of my calcium. Need something new. Please help!

Thanks,

Hi Susie! I made a post a bit ago with some info on vitamins that might be helpful:

Generally speaking, you can meet your minimums just fine with a multivitamin like Centrum, or the generic drugstore version. I use the Walgreen's version of Centrum 50+, I take two pills per day.

For calcium, you'll want to look for calcium CITRATE, which will be absorbed the best. I get the generic Citracal from Walgreens. Make sure to check the label to see how many you'll need per day; the "petites" are easier to swallow, but they're a lower dose.

for vitamins I use the multi patch and supplement where needed

First, what brand supplements/calcium have you used in the past? What are your current supplement/calcium brands you are tired of?

I use Celebrate Vitamins and my numbers are great. Plus, they just opened a retail store in Cleveland.

They cost more, but I take my health very seriously.

I don't have RNY, so I know maybe our needs are different. I was taking just a regular multi-vitamin, but I was actually not taking enough vitamins. I doubled them up until they were out, but then ordered celebrate chew-able multivitamins in pineapple-strawberry flavor https://www.celebratevitamins.com/multivitamin-chewable.html those are the vitamins. You take one chew in the morning and one before you go to bed. However I take just a store brand iron and calcium vitamin. I double up on the iron pill. Next time I order the multi, I may just get the capsule rather than the chew-able.

I take Celebrate Bariatric multi with iron 60mg... they have formulations with lower iron and no iron. Bariatric Advantage is another good brand but Celebrate is a little cheaper.

You need a Bariatric multivitamin that meets the ASMBS Nutritonal Supplement Guidelines. Beware of vitamins labeled as Bariatric that do not meet the guidelines -- lots of false advertising out there.

And don't take non-Bariatric multivitamins... vitamin deficiencies take a long time to show up... I have to SMH when people say they are 6-mos out from surgery and take Flinstones Chewables and their labs are fine.

You also need calcium and be sure to space that several hours away from your iron. It will interfere with iron absorption.

Some people like to take vit C with their iron because it helps absorption.

I get the Flintstones thing but why can we only take bariatric vitamins? It seems as long as we?re meeting the ASMBS guidelines anything would work?
