Crazy thoughts..

10 days post op here

full liquids. Getting 90 G protein through shakes and minimum 64 oz water

I had a lap band. I felt lap band restriction. I feel nothing like that now. No trouble drink inking. I drink quickly , but sip not gulp

I have had some soups , same thickness as shakes maybe a tiny bit thicker  I haven't tried purees, maybe when I do I will feel fullness  I expect that shakes and water just go straight through and don't sit in the pouch

my crazy thought?  They didn't make my tummy small enough. Didn't make my stomach small enough ! I sip my water too fast. I broke my RNY.

I see my dr and NUT on Monday.

On on the flip side I am able to recognize head hunger , craving stimulated by sights and smells , I even find reading the RNY menu for th day triggery   So I am not totally crazy :)

it's time to stop drinking too fast.  i drank water from a shop glass size cup to retrain myself not to gulp.

i also had sf popcycles - 4 oz of fluid that i had to eat slowly.

you may need to find something that will work for you - now before you do damage.

For perspective on speed of sipping - just had my decaf latte 8 oz over 45 mins.

Water is  10oz over an hour.

I definitely sip sip and not gulp

At 2 weeks post op, I could finish a 12oz protein shake in 20 minutes with zero problems.

everyone is different.  i don't think i could do that much that fast now, >a year out.  but why try???  the point is you cannot trust feeling full yet - even fluid takes time to empty out of a pouch.

How do you do damage by drinking?  The pouch has a hole at both ends.  The worst that will happen is that the liquid backs up, but it's clearly not happening here.  This is akin to saying that soda will stretch your pouch.

The "oh no, they didn't make my stomach small enough" thing is very common.  The nerves in your stomach were cut, so you can't feel the restriction right now -- something you didn't experience which the lap band.  Just keep doing what your doc told you to do and you will be fine. When you switch to the soft foods, you'll all of a sudden feel it.

But take your time with drinks.  To this day, 13 years later, a 16 oz coffee takes me a minimum of half an hour to drink.  I drink some, put it down and do other things, drink so more, do other things.   When the new Star Wars movie came out a group of us went and we stopped to "grab a quick coffee" before the movie.  I got the smallest one they had and the only reason I finished it before we got into the movie was because there was a line and it took us 20 minutes to get in.

Edited to add: I just saw your other reply on the sipping.  Sounds like you are doing great.

A lot of people drink normally after surgery. If you are uncomfortable, slow down. But if you can drink a glass of water in five minutes, you're doing great. You can't stretch anything with fluids or purees.

What you describe is very common for former bandsters. Many don't lose as much, or as fast, as a brand new RNY or VSG. That's because eating certain things is actually EASIER now without that awful band in the way. This is yet another reason why weighing and measuring food is incredibly important. Make a good plan, and stick to the plan. Do NOT count on a tiny stomach acting like an armed guard that will keep you from overeating. Do NOT count on feeling stuffed to keep you from overeating.
