Recently, a healthcare professional suggested taking the drug, Metformin, as a way to extend the diabetes remission time period in addition to diet, exercise, and stable weight.  Is anyone doing this?  Why or why not?  Suggestions and/or advice appreciated.

My endo put me on metformin the year before my WLS.  I was never diagnosed as Diabetic but pre-diabetic.  I know that some people think pre-diabetic isn't a thing.  All I know is that I was headed for the needle if I didn't lose weight and get myself in control.  I stopped taking it immediately after surgery and now have normal blood sugar readings and A1C.

I saw my PCP last week for my regular diabetes check up.  He said that my surgeon will take me off Metformin right after surgery.  My RNY will be on 12/4...so looking forward to getting off all my meds!

I've never heard of someone taking it prophylactically, but what do I know.

Personally I would refuse.  Metformin can cause nasty diarrhea and now is blamed for kidney damage.

I never heard of that. I used to be on metformin since it is a diabetes medication, it didn't really agree with me so I switched to a different medication. For me, part of the reason to have surgery was to get off the medication, not stay on it for an indefinite period of time. I rather keep up with the dietary changes & keep up with my bloodwork & then see if I had to go back on the drugs, rather than the other way around.

My diabetes remission ended about 5 years ago and I keep my HbA1c in check with Metformin, good diet and exercise.   It works really well for me, and you would have to pry it out of my cold dead hands ...

Me too. My remission ended about a year and a half after surgery, but I had been a diagnosed diabetic for eight to ten years and have a very strong family history (from grandparents and parent who were not overweight). I take Metformin now and have great numbers. I've never heard of it being preventative, but I would have been willing to take it before remission ended.
