How to get in 800 calories

Hello! I am supposed to be getting in 800 calories and 75 grams of protein per day. I seem to always meet the protein amount but never get close to hitting the 800 calories. What is a healthy way to get to the calorie amount without adding extra protein?

If you are on MyFitnessPal, I would love to follow some RNY post-ops to get ideas on how to mix up the day. I have a habit of getting stuck in a rut.

As always, thank you for your help!

To add calories, you must add either more protein, carbs or fat.  Or some combination of all those.  I'd probably add a protein shake, which I prefer made with milk, so I'd be adding more protein and carbs to get the additional calories.

Right now I'm just concentrating on protein. At my 2 week follow-up I was told to not worry about calories right now. My next appointment is next Wednesday so I'll find out what's next.

I was told by my surgeon as long as I got in my protein he wasn't too concerned with the calories being on the lower side. You might want to ask your Doc the next time you see him/her.

Protein shakes are great! Get all the protein in you can. I use a scoop of Body Fortress (chocolate), 8oz of 1% milk, and then sugar free pudding mix to add another flavor (I like the cheesecake, or I add a little bit of peppermint extract for a mint chocolate chip flavor). Then just blend it right up. That puts me at around a 200 cal protein shake with 38 grams of protein.

Why would you not want to add more protein?

You don't have to worry about going over your protein goal, as long as it's not a stupidly high number like multiple hundreds of grams of protein! I'm with the people who've recommended a protein shake to add some calories if you feel you need them, but also I think you will be ok with the lower calories for a while as long as you're hitting that protein number. If you want to see my menu (I'm almost six months out, though) you can add me on MFP, I'm Cunning_Pam on there as well.

Also, you may want to check out the daily "What's On The Menu Today, RNYers?" thread that's posted in this forum. You can get some good ideas for foods to try to break out of a rut based on what other people are eating. We have a good mix of people who are pretty freshly post-op and people who are a bit further out, so there's something for everyone.

Good luck!
