How did you calculate your goal weight?
I am 6 weeks out of surgery and I know that I want to lose over 100lbs but I see all of these people who have a goal weight. How did you calculate that? Did you just look at a BMI chart and look at what range you are supposed to be in to be healthy or did you formulate this with your doctors?
I am 5'8'' and currently weigh 254lb … at my highest weight I was 305lb. How much should I weigh at my goal? Please help!
Thank you!
I haven't set a goal weight for myself yet, but I think most folks aim for the middle of their weight range on the BMI chart. I understand you can kind of figure out your build from your wrist circumference--that might be a good start to see if you should be thinking of the high, middle or low end of the BMI chart.

I first started mine goal weight at something I though would be reasonable but have now moved it down to the higher part of normal for my BMI. I asked my surgeon and he said not to worry about it because my body will eventually settled on a weight and I have already passed the expected % of loss. I'm sure I will move it again, but I have been overweight to obese since puberty so I have no idea what a normal adult weight is for me. The only reason I even have a goal weight is because I wanted a ticker
I am 5'8 also. My doc said he would be happy with 160. I decided 155 because it was a normal BMI. I am at 142.6 -- so you never know where you may end up.
I knew that when I was married I was148 and slowly went to 150. My clothes looked great and I wanted to get back. I was 5'8" and hoped to be 150 at the finish line. Well, it looks like that was unrealistic so my current weight is basically 165 and has been for over a year. I'm happy and the skinny parts should not get thinner and the curvy part (hips) are fine too. I can indulge in normal food if i keep it light and not gain. I feel good but my iron and potassium are slight problems so I have to keep up with my labs and see my PCP on a regular basis.
When I was in college, I maintained between 140 and 135. I was a theatre major and our weight was reviewed by professors just like our performances and test scores. It's a fact that's hard to deny--fat actresses don't work as much as thin ones.
I was told by all who dared to comment that I would look fantastic if I could just lose 10 more pounds. So when I thought about my goal weight 125 made sense.
I'm at 126 right now. While I'm getting comments from my friends about how I shouldn't lose anymore weight, I'm actually going to try for 120 lbs. (a stretch goal!). The reason? I'm kind of between sizes right now. I bought a bunch of clothes when I was home at Christmas and weighed about 12 more pounds--mostly size 4 dress pants and size 2 jeans. They're loose now and don't fit as well. If I took off another five pounds, I think I could go down a size. I'd also have a little wiggle room when it comes to regain.
I'm not broadcasting the fact (and plan to celebrate when I hit 125), but 120 is my ultimate target.
I just made a goal for myself that seemed reasonable considering average excess weight loss from surgery. I am calling it my starter goal. Once I get there I might try to figure out where I really want to end up.
My doctor considers 75% EWL as "successful" which would have put me at 156, that was far too high for the way I carry weight. I knew how I looked when I graduate high school at 103, but I was realistic in that I've had 4 kids so I figured 120 would be a good place for me, but secretly hoped I would get to 107, the weight I was when I came home from the hospital after my first daughter. I got down there but now bounce pretty much around 110 I've set a max of 112 for me personally and a low of 107 if I stay in there I'm good. Do what makes you happy weight wise but remember health is the big thing here!
