Hi everyone,

My partner brought me home some sugar-free ice cream from friendly's that has 2gm of sugar and the rest from sugar alcohol. Will that cause dumping? Thanks!

The sugar alcohols won't cause dumping but they give some people painful gas and diarrhea.  They have that effect on some people that haven't had WLS, too.

Some people are sensitive to sugar alcohol... ME ME ME -- OMG I learned it the hard way with Sugar Free Pillsbury Muffin mix.  I missed church sitting on the potty. If you are going to try, be prepared just in case you have issues.

Some people, like me, are MUCH more sensitive to sugar alcohols than to sugar. So proceed with caution. Sugar free, of course, does not mean calorie free or fat-free, so keep that in mind as well.

Personally, i think even SF ice cream at only a month out is a really bad idea!

9.5 years out and still cannot eat ice cream - sugar free,  no sugar added or full fuel devil...   Can't even imagine trying it at your stage!

My husband and I were big candy eaters before my surgery.  Every night we would sit on the bed, watch TV and share what ever candy we had.  Well no more of that!!  But he is still so sweet, even though he is working on his sugar addiction he still eats candy sometimes.  He felt bad so he bought me some sugar free candy, with sugar alcohols in them.  I only eat one or two.  So far it has been fine for me.  I have heard a lot of people that can not eat sugar alcohols, surgery or not!!  My father in law was doing atkins, he had a whole bag of sugar free jelly beans.......Bad news for him......couldn't get off the toilet.

Y'know, I have a friend who's an alcoholic. Been sober for over 25 years. Someone brought her some alcohol free "wine" once as a gift (trying to be sweet and inclusive). My friend IMMEDIATELY turned it down - calling it too close to the real thing and a real slippery slope. And I couldn't agree more! IMO you're playing with fire with those fake sugar things... they DO have calories - and a fair amount as I recall, plus they open up Pandora's box. My advice? Purchase a bunch of SF popsicles and when Hubby wants his sugar, you have one of those. You get a lot of bang for your calorie buck with those - 15 calories each I believe.
Just sayin'.

You are right, it is a fine line......the only difference is........I can't eat real sugar and probably never will be able too.  That is a wagon I will never get back on.

Well, we all SAY that... "I'll never eat it again", but we're human - and sometimes, we slip - and it just seems to me, that eating fake sugar is waaaaaay too close to the real thing - plus, as I said, those calories add up (aren't they like 130 cal per serving?), and they are non-nutritional.

Just sayin!
