Effects of alcohol after gastric bypass
Ok, I know my DR said I should not drink at all. My little sister got married over the weekend and I didn't think wine would be that bad to drink. I ended up having 5 glasses of wine and now I have been sick everyday with leg cramps and nausea. I don't want to call my DR because I know that he advised me not to drink. Has anyone else done something this careless? Should I be worried I have messed up something?
I would call the doctor. You will not be the first in this situation.
I am only 7 weeks out so i have not tried any kind of alcohol. I was advised not to drink any alcohol for 1 year..
the people in the support group i attend say that just a couple sips get them really buzzed.... be careful and call your doctor!
A healthy liver processes a unit of alcohol per hour ... In all probablility this has nothing to do with your RNY, because it is now days since you drank the 5 glasses (that is a lot, BTW!). This would have been processed in 10 hours if they were small glasses or 20 hours if they were large!!!
The nausea and leg cramps you have now are likely to have another cause and are probably coincidental - they still necessitate a doctor's visit and some blood checks though - it is highly possible that they are caused by vitamin or mineral deficiencies.

Kind along with Kim's line of thought when you are in Ketosis, the rapid weight loss phase, your liver is WORKING IT'S ASS OFF dealing with metabolizing all the crap that is stored in your fat that gets dumped on it during that phase. When you drink during that stage all you are doing is putting extra work on your liver.
If you think you must be at home or out only with trusted friends. Getting buzzed on one drink and being cheap to feed is what makes RNY's great dates!
Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!
I am now 17 months post op and it was a special occasion for my baby sister's wedding. I am normally not a drinker EVER. Believe it or not 4 days later and I am starting to feel better. Drinking a little more water than usual just trying to flush out anything left in my system. No, I don't think the cramps had anything to do with my surgery. It was the fact that I put my body through something it is not used to and it was in shock. I just was wondering if anyone else had attempted to drink any alcohol at all after surgery. Now with that being said I WILL NEVER drink again. That was so not worth the pain I felt for 4 days. So if your DR tells you not to drink alcohol better follow his advice.
Thank you everyone for the input and advice on this one. I totally learned that my body can not tolerate alcohol.
