2-Year Old Has Weight Loss Surgery
Forgive me if this has already been posted and discussed. I'm not sure how I feel about this given all of the possible complications that he could/can face as a result of this surgery. However, as stated in the article, as a parent you don't know what you would or would not do when it comes to your child's life and health. http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/20/living/parents-2-year-old-weight-loss-surgery/index.html?hpt=hp_t3
At least he had a VSG and not a lapband - which absolutely would be child abuse! As a mother, it's upsetting, but I'm sure this decision was not taken lightly by the surgeon or the boy's parents.
It would be a "no" for me personally, but I tried to give up judging parents for their choices years ago!

It's not my place to judge the parents. I really hope the child continues to do well and there isn't any long term affects for him.

What got me about this is the article said that mom & dad could not keep him on a lower calorie diet because they didnt understand it. Sooo they are going to understand his eating restrictions for the lap band?
We all had to go through psych testing before we had our surgery. What about these parents?

Had the EXACT same thought when I read that this morning.
Parents don't sound like the brightest bulbs on the string!

Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way. Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!
It's important to note that this was in Saudi Arabia - the rules for pre-op may be different there and that may have contributed to the parent's difficulty in keeping the kid on a low calorie diet originally. It is also noteworthy that this surgery happened long enough ago to see results in the child - he is now at a normal bmi. However, it is alarming that something so drastic would be used on a child.
My little sister just turned 12 and qualifies for surgery based on BMI alone. Before reading this article I thought about the possibility of her getting surgery but came to the conclusion that she wouldn't have the self discipline or understanding to be able to be successful right now. I haven't even told her that I had weightloss surgery because I don't want her to think she can just give up and when she's an adult have surgery and be "fixed". My parents already do nothing about her weight problem and continue to bring unhealthy junk food home so why would they change that after surgery when they neglected to help her before surgery. This is a 12yr old so I can't even imagine a child my son's age going through this. It may help immediately but I really question if he will experience long term success.
