Hospital weight gain

As I was reading through the mountains of pre op info given to me at my surgeon's class before having surgery, I read that you weigh more when you leave the hospital after surgery.  I talked to a co-worker who had her surgery last October and said she was 20 pounds heavier!  Kind of freaked me out.  I guess it is from the IV fluids you get????  And what experience have any of you had with this and how long before that comes off?  I know there isn't any set answer because everyone is different, just want to get a better picture of this.  Thanks in advance for your replies.  Karin

I think most people gain a bit less than 20 lbs.   Maybe 10 lbs or so is common but everyone is a bit different and yes, it's from all the IV fluids they pump into you, as well as the swelling in your body due to the surgery.  Usually takes around a week to come off, give or take a few days.

My husband and I each gained 10 lbs in the hospital. We were both in for less than 24 hours.

Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

I gained 3 before I was discharged. I lost that within days.  Also, I was readmitted for a CDiff infection about 10 days later and when I was discharged, I had gained back 8 pounds.  From my understanding, it's from all the IV fluids.

Wishing you all the best!

I gained weight but not sure how much. your full of iv fluids & very swollen, my suggestion is not to step on a scale for a full week. Once the weight starts to come off you will be surprised at how quickly you drop in the beginning. Also remember you will hit stalls from time to time. Most people have their 1st stall at 3 weeks post-op. It's annoying but it's your body's way of saying "what the hell is going on here"

Good luck
