For those of you who never had lactose intolerance BEFORE surgery. How many of you got it after? And how soon after surgery did it start?

Thanks!

First time I drank a glass of milk and was miserable for hours afterward.

Good news is cheese causes me no problems at all, other than being a high calorie/fat food.

For me it was around week 2-3 once I started doing my protein shakes. So i had to find one pretty quick that was lactose free and didnt make me gag. Now I buy Lactose free milk, and it isnt to bad. But I always have Lactaid close by just in case.

My surgeon told me to try a small glass of milk when I got home from the hospital. I also use lactose free milk.

It took me a few months.  I thought I might be lactose intolerant early on and started mixing my shakes with soy milk...but the shakes still made me sick and I had diarrhea daily.  Then I started to research the protein powder and found out that the powder I was using contained whey concentrate, which means it contains lactose.  When I switched to whey isolate I finally stopped feeling nauseous and the diarrhea stopped.  I can still eat yogurt and cheese.  They use and enzyme while processing them that "eats" the lactose out of them.  I was not lactose intolerant before surgery.

it was a few months. But at the same time I realized that I also dump on milk sugar. I am not sure if I am lactose intolerant or simply can't handle too much liquid sugar.

It was a few months for me. Maybe 3-4 months. I tried a glass of milk and it sent me running to the bathroom. I drink almond milk now.

About a month. I was mixing my protein shake with milk and was so miserable after, I couldn't sleep. It has gotten better now, but it is still not the best beverage choice for me.

A couple of weeks. Yogurt and cheese are fine but milk is a no go.
