New Whey Liquid Protein

I'm pre-op (I meet the surgeon on Tuesday!), but thought I would take some advice offered at a local support group, and try some protein supplements now just to get an idea of tastes and textures and whatnot.

What I picked up tonight (in a US Walmart [I live in Canada]) is New Whey Liquid Protein in grape flavour. My question is, assuming I can tolerate the taste/texture is it compliant with post-op dietary rules?

Calories 180; Fat 0; Carb 2g; Sugar 0; Protein 42g; Sodium 100mg; Potassium 50mg

No lactose, gluten, caffeine, sugar or fat.

Cheers!

the protein in it is not what we are looking for post op. It is mostly collagen.

Hello...Another thing is that is may have 42g of protein, but you will only absorb a small portion of that if. I bought a protein powder to make shakes with and it 25g per serving, and the nurse said I was only going to get part of it. Still sounds like a great buy though!

My question would be is where does the 180 Cals come from if there is no sugar in it....

Good luck!

The calories come from the (crappy collagen) protein in it, of course.   All protein has calories, and the lack of amino acids that would allow us to absorb it doesn't change that. :)

Have you seen a nutritionist yet?  Mine gave me samples of different protein shakes to try.  That was really helpful for me. That might be an option for you as well so you know exactly what type you should have.

Actually, as soon as MrsLitch posted about the collagen, I suddenly remembered the booklet the nutritionist provided at the pre-surgical class, that happened to be right next to me. Heh. In it are listed 4 good protein shake options, both already mixed, and powders. Looking at that and her voice came back to me about what the first ingredient needs to be. So thank you, MrsLitch, for reminding me I already had the answers!

It's very overwhelming at first remember and learning. Trust me we've all been there. As prepared as I was there were still times I had to ask myself "is this right?" You can always ask here there is a wealth of knowledge and it's where I turned to for help. I can't tell you the times I've gone back and read my booklet to remind me of things.

and just fyi the new whey is horrible tasting to me you aren't missing anything! lol
