Colonic after RNY?

Hi, It's been 3.5 years since my surgery and I'm thinking about having a colonic.  Are there any medical reasons, pertaining to the RNY, that I shouldn't have one?  I'm not sure with all the rearranging in there if it's ok.

Thanks,

My surgeon said "no, never" after RNY when she was asked about it (and several others here got similar responses from their surgeons).  I have never had one, and did not plan to, so I didn't bother to ask why.  This came up just recently here (you might search for the thread), and I do have to wonder why.  If you are only talking about an enema-type treatment rather than ingesting something intended to clean things out, it seems curious.  My only thought was that people sometimes use the same term to mean different things (and doctors know this), so perhaps a blanket "no" from the surgeon is easier than specifying nothing by mouth...?

Your colon has not been rearranged.  The upper part of your small intestine has been rearranged.

That said, I don't know if there is any medical reason not to have one.  I can't think of any, but that doesn't mean there isn't one.  Can you call your surgeon and ask?

Thanks for your responses.  I'll check with my surgeon before proceeding.

There is always the possibility that a colonic will strip out good bacteria along with whatever else is normally present in the eco-system that makes up a human intestinal tract.
If it's simply sterile water, there's most likely no harm, but if other ingredients are added, you may also sacrifice the mucus lining your colon.
I think you should ask whoever you see for your health.

Yeah, with something like this I would definitly consult your surgeon first, only he or she would be able to give you the best advice.

Peace & Blessings... Kelly
