Good morning everyone,

I am currently in a pickle about my depression and anxiety and insomnia.  I just started to see a therapist that specializes in bariatric surgery patients.  I am having an awful time getting any sleep and my panic attacks have returned:-(   She is trying to adjust my meds and get me a new sleep study.  My question is does anyone else have insomnia? can you give me some insight on what works for you?  Last night for instance she wanted me to start taking klonopin .5mg  instead of xanax 1mg.  I took one at 10pm nothing one more at 11pm nothing i ended up taking 5  i fell asleep by 2am and was wide awake at 5:30am.

Thanks  everyone

Debbie

I have a really hard time sleeping from midnight to 5am... I  usually get about 4 hours a night.

Maybe you should try taking the meds much earlier?

Do you have any kind of bedtime routine? I try to prepare myself for bed, by slowing down and winding down. PM if you would like any suggestions.

I am currently doing well with sleep, but have struggled in the past.

Do you take a sleep medication? I found that pairing an anti-anxiety medication with a sleeping medication worked best for me.

I wish I could give you encouraging news Debbie.  My surgery was 7/12/05 so I am a little over 6 years out.  I have not been able to sleep since the day of my surgery.  I started out the first 2 yrs taking Benadryl before developing chronic kidney stones.

Was then switched to Ambien and over the next 4 years developed a tolerance and now take 2 Ambien and 2 Remeron per night.  Well, that's what's prescribed.  I usually take all 120 sleeping pills within 2 weeks and then get by on OTC sleeping aids the remaining 2 weeks because I have built up such a tolerance to them that all that I don't sleep more than a couple of hours per dose.

I do crazy things on the Ambien including posting things on Facebook, texting people, cooking, getting in my dangerous attic just to name a few...all of which I have no memory of doing.  I run into walls, furniture, etc and fall quite often too.  I have seen specialist and have begged for help....I have told them all that my problem started the day of my surgery.  They all just basically scratch their heads, run more labs and either try new RX sleeping meds and/or tell me I'm depressed.  My problem does not stem from depression, but to be perfectly honest, I'm getting depressed because I am so sleep deprived and I'm exhausted.  My body just won't go to sleep and when I do, I don't stay asleep very long.

I have tried researching myself and I just can't find anything on the internet.  I need help in the worst way and just am coming up with nothing.  Does anyone have any knowledge of any physician or clinic that has figured out that some bariatric patients are suffering from severe, chronic insomnia?  Just as an FYI, I had complications with my surgery.....a staple hit an artery, I hemorrhaged and had to have a second surgery the following day after my hemoglobin dropped to 7 before they decided something wasn't right.  I share this because I suspect it might have something to do with why I have been plagued with the insomnia.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated by me, Debbie and anyone else who is living this nightmare.....Thanks!!!

Im so sorry, i know for me its torture not to have enough sleep.  But please, please dont ignore the depression.  Talk to your doc about it because untreated depression can have a great impact on your sleeping.

I have found a therapist that specializes in phychology for gastric bypass patients.  and I am going to see a sleep specialest from a university that specializes in gastric bypass  patients.  I found that although this surgery has been done since the early 90's there is still not enough people on other ends such as phychiatry  and not many other physician specialists understand how our new system works. We just dont absorb things the way a normal stomach does.

My new therapist put me on klonopin 2mg and it gets me sleeping for atleast 5 hrs for now. I also use a cpap  machine.

I am going to frined request you and i will keep you posted.  There is an answer out there and im going to find it. and hope fully help others too.

Regards

Debbie
