Meloxicam

After speaking to the dietician yesterday I was informed that I should stop my "meloxicam"  I understand that I should not have it before my surgery on the 13th but then she also informed me I would never be able to have it again.  I am in a panic mode...this is a drug that I take for my arthritis!  I asked if I would go through withdrawl and she said no!
Has anyone else any knowledge of Meloxicam and what they can use as a replacement.  I have a call into my family physician to let him know and to see what I can take as a replacement, if there is one!

no NSAIDS after surgery. You could consult with your pharmacist as well.

correction, no NSAIDS after RNY surgery. . . I had a VSG NSAIDs are OK.

Is the OP having RNY?

Tramacet is a good alternative, I know many post RNY patient's who use it

I took this before my RNY and have not needed it since.
I take Tramacet for occasional pain.

No you will not go through withdrawal, but she is right you will not be able to use NSAID again

I also take meloicam daily and this is one of the reasons that I insisted on a VSG, your next option

for pain, is going to be  a narcotic pain med,

I took meloxicam regularly before surgery.  Post surgery, (and 100 lbs later) I have no need of it.   The occassional arthritis pain that I do have can be managed with Tylenol for Arthritis.  ...On the other hand, everyone is different, in terms of their needs for meds.

Thank you all so much.  I  never thought to stop and think about the reduction in weight will mean a reduction in arthritis pain.  I take T3's for pain now as the Tramacet stopped working.  I refuse to take anything stronger.  I will have to endure a little more discomfort and bite the bullet. ...So as you have all answered  "no replacement", so here goes my start of 2 less pills a day!!

Hello Kate,

I took that up to the day of my sugery Feb 26, RNY since then i have had none, but i also take percs and i am weaning off of oxies because the oxies is a 12 hour release and is no longer effective for that lengh of time. I have sciatica back and OA both knees, ankle and feet since i lost 46 lbs my knees, ankles and feet do not  hurt as  much, but my back is still in pain but i can tolerate that with the help of perc.

Good luck with your surgery, I wish all will go well for you,

Seems you and I both suffer the same type of pain for the same things.  I weaned off of narcotics a year ago, I had been on Fentanyl patches and then Dilaudid, both 12 hr release Also had monthly epidurals for pain management too for awhile..  It helped the pain but I have no memory of the previous 3 yrs while on them.  I really think the only thing that will help the knees is to have the replacements but  as for my back and sciatica, there is nothing.  It is going to get worse I am sure.  Like my father before me.   Don't want to take any type of narcotics anymore whatsoever....Guess if I have to give something up besides the weight it can be the Meloxicam.
thanks for you Imput.
