Calorie Intake Question

I keep track of all of my food intake, calorie consumption, and portion sizes. That way I can pinpoint food choices that are high in carbs, ones that could be adjusted, and have it as a reference for doctors appointments. However, I was told I'm not getting enough calories. I eat 3 meals a day and one snack at night. My goal calorie consumption is at least 1000-1200 calories. Yet I can't even get past 900 without the fear of eating the wrong food choices :( I have yet to have weight loss surgery, and am having trouble finding a dietician who will take my insurance. I wish that I could get into a dietician so they could help me out with food choices, and things like that. my only fear is that by adding calories I will make the wrong food choices & just continue to gain weight.

I was just wondering if anyone had any good food ideas that will help raise my calorie intake without packing on extra carbs or fat??

Any ideas???

I would appreciate any food suggestions, recipes, or ideas that you have to offer. Thank you!

I"m not really good at suggestions for food, I tend to be on the low end all the time too.  As to finding a dietitian I'd ask your doctors office to refer you to someone. They know what places accept which insurance usually.  At least I know mine does. They were able to set up all of that for me without me having to make any calls.   Just a suggestion :)

Good luck!

I started seeing a new specialist.  They were able to get me into see the head of the department who was more experienced in cases like mine, then got me into another specialist in the same hospital for another health problem of mine, and then scheduled me an appointment to see the dietician as well. So I have waited for a whole month to see the dietician at this hospital & the friday before my appointment they called to say they were going to have to cancel it because my insurance company was fighting them on the charges. So they were going to file some paperwork to see if they would cover part of the cost like they are supposed to. I pay 10% of the cost upfront as a copay. Then the insurance company decides what they are going to cover, and then I pay the remaining balance later. I don't see why they would have an issue with me seeing a dietician to make me healthier and hopefully eliminate some of my health concerns that they are assisting in paying for.

I was the same way so I started to add fruit to my snacks that adds the calories up , and its good choices for food.

I eat bananas, cantaloupe, any type of fruit . Yes it does have carbs but they are good carbs so I dont worry about my carb intake when I eat things like that .

The only time I worry about my carb intake is when I eat the bad foods IE chips, mashed potatoes, baked potato and so on.

Like yesterday I hit will over 80 carbs but it was from all the fruit  and veggies I ate through out the day :o)

I obsessed about carbs also but there is a difference between the good carbs and the bad carbs :o)   It took me a long time after my surgery to get that through my head. I refused to eat fruit because of all the carbs but I talked to my personal trainer and he was telling me how good fruit is for our bodies :o)

I say if what you are doing is working, stick with it. If you add 2 glasses of low fat milk, that would increase you to 1000-1200 calories.

Another thought is to add a protien shake or two.  I eat lots of lean meat and veggies.  For breakfast it's usually egg.  I snack on 1/4c nuts and lowfat cheese sticks.  Hope this helps!

Thank you all for your thoughts, and suggestions. I never looked at it as good carbs verses bad carbs. So maybe my carb intake isn't so bad after all. I can't wait to get into a dietician who can help me break down things. I feel so clueless as to what is good or bad, what I could improve on, and healthy things I could add in there. I always see awesome meal ideas on here. I can say that I haven't even had weight loss surgery yet & can tell this is going to be a great site to be a member of  And as for my calorie intake maybe I'll just worry about eating healthy verses counting calories for the time being until I can get into the dietician. That way I'm not stressing on a daily basis over not getting enough calories.

As for the cheese idea. I never thought of that as a snack idea. Maybe when I'm at the store this week I'll spend some time browsing & try to come up with some new snack/meal ideas :)
