drinking while running

I just ran my first half marathon on 5/6 and found it very difficult to drink more than a tiny sip at each aid station while I was running.

Anyone else have this problem? My calves were all cramped up when I finished and I'm sure it was dehydration.

CONGRATS! on finishing your first half!

When I do longer races I carry my own hydration and find it easier to drink out of a sports bottle than a cup. If I have to stop at an aid station on a shorter run like a 5K in a sprint I will walk and drink as I get to much air anyother way.

Leg crapms probably was some dehydration.

Thanks! I think you're right about getting too much air while drinking. I tried using the cups with straws during the race and they were only a little bit better.

I'm going to try carrying a sports bottle this summer during my shorter runs now that it's hot out.

First of all Congratulation!
Now comes to your problem, I was facing the same problem at Sydney half merathon. I also need some assistant about this problem. My trainer told me that due to excess of water it may happen.

I always drink from a squeeze bottle and must stop running and walk while doing so....otherwise I gulp too much air.

I notices that if I try and suck the fluid out of a sport container I get too much air. So, I have adjusted my drinking to hold the bottle higher than my mouth and squeeze the fluid into my mouth, this way very little air gets in, and I control the air if some does get in by swishing it in my mouth prior to swallowing. Sounds difficult, but it really isn't. It truly has helped me get fluids in and not take in air.

Good luck, and congratz on your first half marathon, hopefully you have the bug.

Keep on running.

Thanks, I'll try that! I'll probably do another half! I have a team relay planed for October that I'll have to run at least 10 miles of and I'm thinking about trying to get into the Twin cities 10 miler. I love my running group, so I won't be quitting any time soon!
