Pre-surgery weight loss

I am feeling so discouraged.  I'm in my 3 month nutrition/exercise program and I'm having a hard time losing weight. Last week at weigh in I lost nothing and I'm afraid this week will be the same.

I seem to do fine during the week... Tracking calories on My fitness pal. But on the weekend I lose my momentum and gain back what I lost during the week.

I'm not eating terribly on the weekends (pizza, ice cream, deep fried stuff). But I have been eating out some.

I don't know what to do. It's hard to be disciplined every single day. My friends seem to doubt my ability to succeed. I'm embarrassed.

I know it's hard.  We have all been there.

Track everything and be really honest.  I had to do a nine month supervised weight loss.  For the first 6 months I lost nothing.  In fact, I think I gained 8 pounds.

I was often embarrassed to write down everything -- or I'd put less than what I really ate.  Sometimes, I just wouldn't log.  It's very important that you log everything and everyday.  Keep track of your emotions when you eat.  Is there a pattern?  What is it about the weekend that is hard for you to overcome?  How can you change that?

You can do this.  Your friends are wrong.  Friends should be your biggest supporters -- it's not their job to doubt you -- we've got the rest of the whole cruel world to do that!  You've nothing to be embarrassed about -- you are learning right now.  I have full faith that you will succeed.

Edited to add: I'm noelscat on myfitnesspal if you'd like a friend.  However, I caution that I am post-op so don't feel badly if I am eating less... I should be.  :-)

Are you doing this for insurance purposes? Does your surgeon require you to lose a certain amount before he will schedule surgery? I had to do the six months supervised diet before i could get insurance approval. I did not have to lose anything (and I did not). I knew I needed surgery to be successful. I could not do it on my own.

If you have to lose a certain amount, find something that works for you. If you need to drink 3 protein shakes a day and a sensible meal, then do that. Slim Fast high protein shakes are easy to find in stores. Play the game to get your surgery. You can learn good habits along the way like I did.

I have to do a 3 month or 6 month program for my insurance. I am starting out with 3 months, but might go 6. It just depends where I'm at. The bariatric center would like me to lose lose 5% or 10% of my body weight, which is 25-45 pounds.

The first 10 pounds weren't hard. But now I'm really getting into the hard part. I definitely made some mistakes this weekend. My friend had a party Saturday and I drank several drinks. It's not something I usually do, but I know that drinking does not help weight loss. At all.

I just need to own up to what I'm doing. Right and wrong. Fortunately this program lets you have multiple meetings with the nutritionist, health coach, and exercise specialist. They also have psychological help. I'm seeing a counselor before tonight's meeting.

I have tried losing weight on my own before, but I've never had to be weighed in front of someone every week. It is pretty terrifying and makes me super anxious. This is my second meeting but 4th week being weighed.

Noelscat, I added you on myfitnesspal. I'm sassylike there, too.

Thank you for the encouraging words!

Sounds like you have some really good support on here and I echo everything they have said. I do want to give you the gift of my experience though since I feel like we have the same struggles. I am currently working on my emotional eating/goals/reasons for being healthy with a psychologist. Sometimes I hear this takes years. Embrace the fact that you have all the help you do and take advantage of it like you're doing!  You will do great. I am 8 years out and regained 65 pounds. I am not saying that you will do the same but just wanted you to be aware that a lot of us have regained weight and are struggling with emotional/comfort eating.

I also starting drinking more and am in recovery. I had to change some of the people, places, and things that I used to do. I don't want to scare you but just want you to be aware. I did not take advice given to me. I am here for support and encouragement to others so they may be able to use my experiences. I wish you all the best. Do not be afraid - it will all be ok!
