Adding an avatar, I"m stumped

And getting really frustrated!!

How in the world do you add an avatar?  I've edited the picture down to size and it says it's too big.  Then it will say it's not a jpeg so I convert it and still can't add.  I've also tried to take the avatar from my blogger and it's saying it doesn't recognize it.  I'm losing my mind here.  This is NOT nice to do to someone on day 2 of her liquid diet!!

Seriously, I have tears!

I found it difficult too that's why I used the puppy.
