How many grams of fat per day should I be eating? I am 5 weeks post-op.

It seems like I have too much fat in my diet even though I am eating low fat. Today I have had tuna with low fat mayonnaise, three turkey meatballs with a sprinkle of cheese, and two pieces of lite cheese. I track every bite on the LOSE IT APP and so far I have had 15g of fat today. That seems like a lot of fat and I still have one meal to go. My protein for the day so far is 42g and carbs is 5g. How many grams of fat a day should I be eating?

With a high protein-low carb diet your fat percentage overall is going to be a lot higher than what you have been told is "normal".  My diet routinely runs right around 40% fat.

My doctor never cared diddly-squat about fat grams or percentages or even calories.  Eventually, when you are further out, you'll want to be eating at least 80 grams of protein per day.  My preference was to stay around 40 grams of carb per day but there are people that do more than that and still find they can lose.  If you follow those guidelines, the fat stays right in line.

The latest research doesn't actually support a super-low-fat diet.  I do full fat butter, mayo, cheese, etc.  The thing is, I don't do that much of it so it really doesn't matter.

LOL!!^^^^^

exactly what Chrissy said!!

Id concentrate on calorie count..don't worry about fat

as long as your watching calories and carbs you'll be fine..

what the cheese intake..lots of calories for practically no volume

I agree with everyone else. Fat isn't inherently bad for you so I  wouldn't stress about it.

Ditto for everyone else. I have maximum calories, minumum protein, low carbs, fat will be fine. Fat is not evil. Bad carbs will kill you.

This is a great question.  Thanks for all the helpful replies. I had been wondering the same thing. My doctor only has me track protein and wants a minimum on calories also. But they don't give any number on carbs, fat, etc. I had been wondering if my fat percentages were ok.  I use MFP.  The Nut had said not to bother with low fat, especially since low fat often as other stuff added to make it tastier (sugar).  Guess I will stop worrying about the fat, as long not in excess and mostly good fats anyway.

I am 5 weeks out too and am finding it tricky to get to my protein goal and balancing my meals.  I am trying to add more veggies to my meals but I cannot eat very much yet. I think that as our sleeves stretch out a bit we will be able to add other things and the fat intake will automatically get lower.  I do not do fat free either but do try to stay away from dairy as much as possible.  My protein comes from other sources which  have less fat.  No to mention the challenge of getting all liquids in, vitamins and walking daily LOL

Here's the simple truth:  You don't get fat eating fat.

You actually want to engineer your diet so it's high fat high protein.  This will be more sustainable for you.

To learn more google NSNG and learn what you can about choosing this as a lifestyle.

Your main focus should be eliminating all sugar and grains.  Do that and you'll succeed beyond your wildest dreams.
