Carb Detox

Has anyone else had to do any sort of carb detox after surgery? Last week, I strayed from plan and had some fried rice. A friend bought my dinner and I pretty much had no choice. I wasn't about to snub her kindness (she has pregnant brain and forgot that I am doing low carb) and it was that or no dinner. But that's been almost 3 days ago and I've been having some kicking carb cravings over the last few days. Combine that with my reflux that isn't quite under control yet (have an appt with GE), and I've been an eating machine yesterday and today. The scale still moved down, but I don't want to start a slippery, carb-laden slope. Another weird thing that I noticed is that, along with the carb cravings came back the old habit of scarfing down my food at warp speed. I haven't done that since before surgery! I was kind of shocked at myself. Last night at dinner and today at lunch, I found myself eating WAY too fast and then, as a result, eating too much. I haven't been as nauseous as these two instances since surgery and IT. WAS. MISERABLE. It's so wild how carbs affect me. I'm back to basics now with a protein shake for dinner (the best thing my reflux will allow), but this has been an eye opener!!

I have always eaten more carbs by far than the "typical" poster here, both in weight loss and maintenance.  Even with my more liberal, balanced approach I will be the first to say that if one overdoes it on the carbs it leads to cravings, hunger, higher calories, and a nasty cycle to break.  For me 15 net carbs alternating with 30 net carbs works well eating 6 times a day.  As long as I stick to that- no issue.  When I have a string of a couple very high carb days then I am full blown in that cycle and I have to be very mindful to break it.  But- you can.  That fortunately is the good news.

Don't let those bad habits creep back in- HT

I have recently added more calories and a few more carbs into my diet.  For me, it totally matters what kind of carbs I eat.  I have not yet had rice, but I can imagine that would make me bloated and leave me with cravings.  I have incorporated some complex carbohydrates into my plan, such as sweet potatoes, winter squash, quinoa, avocado, a little fruit, and lots and lots of green veggies.  I find that these make me feel great, but don't leave me craving things.  It's a learning process.
