When did you give up coffee and soda?

I went to my first group nutrition session. The woman running it told us to say goodbye to cofee and soda now.  Well my surgery isn't until 8/27 so I'm thinking I'll do it around three weeks before.

When did you all quit and do you have any tips?  I LOVE my coffee and my afternoon soda so this is gonna be a tough one.

I gave up soda years ago, never liked the bubbles....but coffee, oh my beloved coffee....I switched to decaf before surgery, and because I only had a one day pre-op diet, stopped it at that point.  I was able to go back to decaf about 3 months out.  I do now have caffeinated, but I 'half' it with decaf.

Check with the nutritionist, and follow what they say....good luck!

My program  recommended that I start practicing the "new habits" immediately, so I gave up the sparkling water when I started the pre-op diet.  I drank coffee until I started the liquid diet pre-op.  I think I could have continued drinking it but could not have the cream at that time.

I resumed by coffee drinking in week 2 post op, as soon as I was allowed.  My tummy could only tolerate a half cup at at time for a while.  I also added back the cream with the coffee, even though they wanted me to use a low fat version.  I figured the calories in cream for a cup of coffee is 40.  I could live with that.

By my estimate, you don't need to be away from coffee for long.   I do miss the sparkling water, but that's the trade-off.

best wishes,

Carol

Thanks Carol! I actually started giving up sparkling water a few days ago. I used to love to add it to orange juice or passionfruit iced tea as kind of a "mocktail".  It's the diet mountain dew that's gonna hurt. I need that pick me up at around 1pm!

I quit when my nutritionist told me to, probably two months prior to surgery

I drink one cup of regular coffee a day now, started a few months post-op

I don't care about soda, it wasn't an issue for me.

You're lucky with the soda! Thanks!

I went cold turkey (sodas only, not a coffee drinker) when I started the liver shrinking diet.  That was two weeks prior to the surgery.

Been free of caffeine for two months now.

However, I've also quit soda twice before for a fair amount of time during previous exercise/diet efforts so this was not my 1st rodeo so to speak.

Thanks. I think I might do it either then or a week before. I know the two week diet is gonna be a real nail biter of a time and I don't want to put migraines in the mix.

I had my last soda 12 hours before surgery.  This was my psychology....Your going to feel bad for the first few days to a week after surgery anyway you cut it so why not just add caffeine withdrawals to the mix.  My No.1 reason for waiting till after surgery is because I hoped that my desires for food and drinks would change and they definately did.  Every NUT is going to say quit ahead of time but its not absolutely necessary.  Just my way of seeing the world.
