Magnesium Citrate: Umm... speed question.

Hello all,

My surgery is Monday (YAY!!) and I am doing to oh-so-fun bowel prep tomorrow with Magnesium Citrate. I've read that it can work in as quickly as an hour OR it can take 10-12 hours to rear it's ugly head. I'd really like to go to church in the morning before I start the bowel prep process, but if it's going to take hours and hours, I'm willing to stay home and get the proverbial show on the road.

What's your experience? The LAST thing I want is to be up all night tomorrow night, or, like one horror story that I just read, STILL be... ummm "prepping my bowels" up until surgery time!! The horror!

It took 5 or 6 hours for it to kick in for me and it lasted and lasted. My last visit to the bathroom was when I was already in a gown and hooked up to an IV. The nurse assured me no one ever had evacuated on the operating table.

I would go to church and then take it somewhere around 2 in the afternoon. I waited until 6 or 7 in the evening thinking it would work in about an hour. Big mistake on my part.

I started mine after 5 pm. I too was in gown and hooked up to the IV and still going but no accident on the table. Lol

I started my process at 3 pm (Gatorade+miralax+colace) and the worst was over by 9 pm, but I was still going in preop...

I was not told about any kind of bowel prep..?

That was the good part of the 2 weeks liquid diet, no bowel prep.  We just switched from the shakes with milk to a clear fruit protein drink for the last 24 hours and nothing by mouth after midnight.

That said I had to do the bowel prep for other events.  Was still going a bit when the time came.  The nurse said not to worry things tend to stop when under.

Good LuckHave fun!

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

No bowel prep for me. I asked my surgeon and he said not to do it...so I didn't. I did it once for a colonoscopy though and it wasn't bad at all. I don't recall it being traumatizing in any way at all. I drank the stuff and the 3 litres of liquid and then it all came out and that was that....

good luck with yours! Hope all goes well for you.

lucky you for most people the prep is the worst part of the colonoscopy , for me it is the iv , for my hubby it was the results, they found something nasty (they cut it out {think alien}) but that was 6 years ago and he is doing great

the nurses hide when I need a iv so someone else will have to do it , takes then 1/2 hour to get it working

never took the mag cit my hubby tried it and could not drink it , now they have flavors , I got grape and cherry

My doc had me take it at 12pm, I had my last bout at about 5am. I would take it as soon as you get home from church!!
